I used to have wings, you know.
When I pushed open the office door, Kailynn looked up from her laptop, her eyes going huge. She practically jumped out of her chair. “Hold up—girl, I leave the country for one month and you turn into a walking disaster? That bruise on your forehead is brand new. What happened? Tell me everything.”
So I sat down and spilled it all. One thing at a time, I told her everything that had gone down these last few days. Kailynn grabbed my hand and shook her head, looking totally floored. “Last time you mentioned divorce, I thought you were just fighting, you know? I mean, Remy always seemed like the dream husband—he treated you so well I was low-key jealous. Who knew he’d still be hung up on his ex and do something that shady? Seriously, my brain can’t handle this. And Julia? Didn’t she run off with some foreign guy years ago? Why come back now just to mess with you?”
I choked on my tea and started coughing.
Honestly, “mess with me” was putting it mildly. For me, it was a disaster.
“He was good to me, but I used to think that meant he loved me. Now I realize it was just guilt. Julia’s always been number one in his heart. All those years he kept his distance, it wasn’t about our marriage. He just never got over Julia and didn’t want to be close to anyone else. In a twisted way, I guess you could say Remy’s loyal.”
Kailynn shot up, jaw dropped. “Wait—are you saying he never even touched you? You’ve been married five years and you’re still a virgin? No wonder you never had kids! If you did, that’d be some kind of miracle baby. Damn, girl, I can’t even process this.”
I let out a bitter laugh and told her about the promise between Remy and Julia. Kailynn’s eyebrows shot up so high they almost left her face.
She slammed her hand on the desk. “You have to divorce him. No question. Remy’s a jerk, end of story. Five years of marriage and you never even got to enjoy it? That’s just cruel. Avery, listen to me. If you don’t leave him, I don’t even know what to say. Dump him. I’ll find you a whole lineup of cute guys—seven in one night if you want. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.”
I could only stare at her, totally speechless.
But just being with Kailynn calmed me down. My head felt clearer, my heart a little lighter.
