“You and Kailynn are close. If you’re really set on divorce, I’ll do whatever I can to help. If it comes down to it, I’ll handle things myself.”
The fact that Liam was willing to step in for me meant everything. But I couldn’t be so selfish as to drag the Foss family into my mess.
I tried calling a bunch of law firms, and just like Liam warned, as soon as they realized it was me, they got all awkward and made up a million excuses to get rid of me.
By noon, I’d gotten absolutely nowhere.
What made it even more frustrating was Leo. Earlier this year, there was a terrible pileup on the highway. Leo had been trapped in his car, with the whole thing about to go up in flames. I’d risked my life to pull him out. Back then, he couldn’t thank me enough. He swore that if I ever needed anything, no matter what it was, he’d help me, even if it killed him.
But when I finally went to him for help, not only did he refuse, he started lecturing me. He told me I should count my blessings, stop making trouble, and warned that if I pushed Mr. Thompson too far, I’d end up with nothing.
His words hit hard. It stings in a way you can’t explain—when you treat someone with all your heart, and they turn on you the moment you need them.
That was my wake-up call. Divorce wasn’t going to be simple. I’d have to play it smart.
If I tried to take Remy head-on, I’d be the only one getting hurt. Here in Georgia Bay, he was practically untouchable.
I left the law office and wandered the streets, aimless and annoyed at myself. The longer I walked, the madder I got. How could I have been so blind? I actually married Remy—all flash on the outside, pure rot on the inside. I couldn’t help but smack myself on the forehead.
A black Cullinan slowed next to me, the window rolling down. To my surprise, it was my boss—the one I hadn’t seen in days. Still as handsome and intimidating as ever.
“Boss? What are you doing here?” I blurted.
He glanced at his watch without even blinking. “I’ve been here since the beginning of time.”
I stared. Was his tongue always this sharp?
I gave a dry laugh. Ever since I’d met Elliot, I felt like I’d been fake-laughing twice as much. “You’re hilarious, boss.”
