“New feature: Each week, one random animal will appear in the ranch–its by–products may be valuable or utterly useless. Treasure them well!”
Caroline stared at that line for a good three times, making sure she was not seeing things. Nope, it really said “useless.” She took a deep breath, then shouted, “Jasper!”
The cat strutted over, still sulking, tail high like a little feline noble.
Caroline pointed at the words on the screen. “I’ve been meaning to ask you. Did these descriptions? Can you edit them?”

Jasper tilted his head, blinking those almond–shaped eyes that gleamed with a mischievous light.
Caroline swore she saw a hint of slyness flash across them.
Then, he raised a paw and swiped across the air.
The text on the screen instantly changed.
“Smelly Animal Gathering Zone
“Level: 3
“Function: In this smelly animal gathering zone, all the animals do nothing but eat, poop, and have babies. Total airheads. You can auto–feed or shovel manually. Their only use is producing two by–products–none of which are edible for cats, unfortunately.
“Limit: Too much eating means too much pooping, which drains space energy. Overfeeding will suck up the healing spring’s energy. Annoying!
“Notes: Bunch of stinky idiots. If it were up to me, I wouldn’t let them in.
“New feature: Once a week, depending on mood, a random animal will appear and produce some weird by–product. If it’s a dinosaur, call me immediately.”
Caroline just stood there, dumbfounded.
Jasper yawned lazily. “Hey, you asked. I don’t usually have permission to change it, but since you brought it up, I just went along with your wishes, Master.”

Caroline’s mouth twitched. “Change it back.”

Jasper looked pitiful. “Master, changing it again takes a lot of energy. I probably can’t fix it until the next space upgrade…”
Caroline rolled her eyes. Cats. Completely impossible to reason with.
Sensing her frustration, Raven padded over, wagging his tail.
Caroline immediately felt her mood lift. At least someone was sweet and reliable.
Jasper glared at Raven, tail puffing up. “Dumb oversized mutt!”
A second later, Raven smacked him flat with one paw.
That, Caroline admitted, was very satisfying to watch.
From this upgrade, she figured out one thing–the next ones would probably get tougher, and each time, only one section of the space could level up. Like now, it was the ranch’s turn.
Ignoring the squabbling duo behind her, Caroline turned and walked toward the ranch to check what kind of “random animal” had spawned this time.
Then she heard a deep, thunderous sound.
She frowned. That voice sounded oddly familiar …
When she stepped closer and saw the massive creature in front of her, her memory clicked. She had heard that sound before at the zoo.
Right there, in her space, stood a full–grown elephant.
Caroline sucked in a breath and quickly checked its by–products. When she saw the result, her mouth twitched again.
“Okay, yeah. Useless. Completely useless.”
The listed item was an Elephant Brand back scratcher.
The description was even more ridiculous. “Works wonders for all itching situations! Wherever it itches, scratch twice, and the itch disappears instantly.”
Caroline groaned but still hit “produce.”
“Whatever, might as well. Maybe it’ll come in handy one day.”
