After a moment, Caroline saw that General was fine and pulled her hand back.

She didn’t heal him completely; it was too risky out here. The place looked empty, but who knew if someone was hiding nearby watching?

To anyone else, her movements probably looked like she was just gently petting the dog.

“General, stay down until we’re gone,” she whispered by his ear.

General’s eyes glimmered again. He looked at Caroline with deep gratitude but did as he was told, lying motionless on the ground.

Caroline turned her focus elsewhere. She gathered up the guns lying around.

They were all old–style hunting rifles; that explained why they fired so slowly earlier.

Only Neville’s gun was smaller, but a closer look showed it was a homemade shotgun, not very reliable.

Still, better than nothing. She stored all of them inside her space pack.

After checking those men were truly dead, she finally relaxed.

Neville was badly wounded. He had already passed out, lying in a heap like messy meat.

That’s when she heard the rumble of an engine.

Caroline turned and spotted military trucks approaching from a distance.

They must’ve heard the grenades and gunfire,

She glanced at Raven. “Raven, leave this fat guy alive, but make sure he can’t talk or write. He tried to eat you, remember? Bite his throat so he can’t speak and his hands so he can’t hold a pen.”

With that, she strapped on her ice skates and left first.

Behind her, Raven lunged at the man.

Caroline didn’t want the military to know what she had done.

Sure, they knew she had a handgun, but they didn’t know about her grenades.

She skated toward the hidden stash Neville had mentioned.

He’d said there was food, water, and something “special” there.

But before she got far, Caroline saw someone gliding toward her on the ice–Tyler.

He’d heard the explosions. Since he was nearby, he had come here to check.

When he spotted the blood on her clothes, his face tightened with concern. “You okay?” he asked.

Caroline looked at Tyler. His clothes weren’t thick, and through his windbreaker she could see a layer of white fur underneath.

If she was right, that was the hide of a mutant rat king.

Behind her, Raven came running.

In the distance, the rumble of a military truck stopped. Soldiers were probably checking out the explosion site by now.

Caroline knew this wasn’t a good place to talk, so she turned to Tyler and said quietly, “Let’s go. This isn’t the place to talk.”

Tyler nodded. He was wearing skates too. Together, they glided away.

Caroline noticed the huge pack strapped to Tyler’s back. Behind him, he was dragging a sled loaded with several bundles.

She couldn’t tell what they were, but they looked like supplies.

After a long stretch, they reached a neighborhood of small houses.

Some still had people inside. When the residents saw the pair arriving with a giant mutant dog, they immediately shut their curtains.

Caroline and Tyler found an empty house nearby. They slipped off their skates, pulled on warm shoes, and went in quietly.

Since the house was still occupied, they moved carefully. They closed the door softly and blocked it with a few pieces of furniture.
