The army now had a huge supply of mutated pork, so getting meat was easier than getting vegetables.
Of course, the last time she ate with Francis, he said the army was also growing a lot of veggies. Otherwise, everyone would get constipated.
“Caroline, you hungry? Wanna grab a bite?” Haroldson asked with a grin.
“Sure.” Caroline nodded with a smile.
After Haroldson invited her inside, he brought out sausages and cor
n biscuits.
Caroline pretended to dig in her bag, but she actually pulled out a can of tomatoes from the storage space.
Haroldson’s eyes lit up. “Wow, I haven’t had tomatoes since the apocalypse started!”
Caroline winked. “Lucky you. I went scavenging today and found two cans. Let’s open one together.”
Haroldson swallowed nervously, feeling a bit awkward at first. Caroline said sharing the good stuff was better than keeping it to yourself, and it could be a thank you gift for Raven eating Haroldson’s chicken drumstick.
Finally, Haroldson agreed, and Caroline opened the can of tomatoes.
Raven, lying nearby, got a sausage from Caroline too, then flopped on the floor to rest.
You could tell Raven was dead tired.
“Caroline, I wanted to talk to you about Captain Richter … Honestly, our captain is really … ”
Haroldson sighed and told her about Niko’s situation.
He said the frontline fighting against mutant creatures wasn’t easy at all; it was way worse than anyone expected.
Now the main mutants were things like mutant rats, mutant cockroaches, mutant centipedes,
and even mutant cats.
The army didn’t have many people to begin with, and they were recruiting at all the major
shelters.

But against those mutants, ordinary civilians were basically just cannon fodder. It was still up to the trained soldiers to handle the fights.
“By the way, Commander Ball said the labs are experimenting on mutating animals and, apparently, they’ve made some progress. You were the one who gave the method, right?”
After talking about the horrors at the frontline, Haroldson switched topics with a smile.
“There’s progress already? That fast?” Caroline asked in disbelief.
“Yeah. The army was already experimenting nonstop, but after they got your method, they apparently grew a mutant dog in just two days. And those crazy scientists are now planning to make mutant lions and tigers. Totally insane.”
Caroline chuckled.
In her previous life, there had been mutant lions and tigers too, but only during the great heat periods. This time, since she’d given the method, the army’s mutant research had sped up. Hopefully, having these mutant animals around later would save some soldiers‘ lives.
“But… Captain Richter got injured,” Haroldson said with a sigh at the end.
It turned out that after Niko went to the frontline, he was in charge of commanding the fight. But he’d never been in real combat. On the battlefield, he ignored orders from higher–ups and saved a brother and sister. That same night, the siblings killed a young soldier who was guarding them.
Later, they found out that the area had long been empty of normal people. Every survivor had resorted to cannibalism to make it.
Niko was furious. He asked the siblings why they kill the soldier who was protecting them, even though they were safe in the shelter.
No one expected the siblings to grin crazily and look at Niko with fiery eyes. “Have you ever tasted human meat? Once you do, you’ll never forget it.”
That night, the siblings were sent to a special camp.
The high–ranking officers said that the camp was for people who had unusual experiences during the apocalypse.
“It’s just a shame about that young soldier. We used to take shifts together. That day, he was laughing and saying how he’d saved up enough supplies that month to trade for a new winter coat for his sister.”
