The ranch was alive with motion, and every animal looked strong. Feed bins were full, and the earth–colored rabbit from the farm had even gotten pregnant.

Caroline froze at the sight. Awe filled her chest. The change was nothing short of incredible.

She stepped out of her storage space and collapsed onto the couch in a lazy sprawl. From that same space she pulled a spread of food that filled the table.

She had it ready to go and split up into portions earlier.

There was diced chicken, shrimp balls, roasted greens, crab stew, and roasted clams.

The meal looked extravagant, almost too fine for the world she lived in.

She brought out one more treasure, a steaming plate of pasta. It wasn’t ordinary pasta.

She had picked the best noodles she could find and cooked them with imported tools.

Each strand of pasta in the plate was separate and perfect. The scent was rich and richly sweet.

A sprinkle of parmesan cheese gave it more flavor and more strength.

Caroline leaned back with her tablet in hand. She ate bite after bite while her show played before her eyes.

It was a messy period drama full of scheming and betrayal, yet the nonsense pulled her in like a tide.

Raven didn’t care. He bit into the little toy she had given him until his eyes drifted closed and his breathing slowed.

Jet was different. He perched on her shoulder and stared at the screen without blinking.

When the villainess struck at the heroine, his wings flapped, and angry cries burst from his throat as if he truly understood the story.

Caroline noticed something else that surprised her. Ever since Jet had endured the acid rain and bathed in the healing spring, he had started to control himself.

All day his diaper stayed clean.

When she removed it, he raced into his cage and used the bathroom like a trained pet.

Caroline’s heart swelled. She set a fresh pad in his cage and reminded him twice to use it.

She stroked his tiny head and smiled. “Jet, you’re amazing. You must be the only bird that ever learned to use the bathroom. You’re the best boy.”

Jet beat his wings with joy. His eyes darted to Raven, and pride filled them. His look seemed to say, See? No more surprises on your

tail.

The night dragged on. Caroline binged her drama, ate through two bags of chips, and drifted into sleep without knowing when her eyes had closed.

The stillness shattered in the dead of night. A scream ripped up the stairwell.

“I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you, you bastard!”

Raven and Jet sprang to the door. Their bodies stiffened, and their eyes locked on the hall outside.

Caroline groaned. She had no desire to get pulled into the noise. She rolled onto her side and tried to sink back into sleep.

But the racket grew louder. Shouts erupted as the sound of bodies crashing and metal striking the floor. The clatter echoed like a drumbeat, making rest impossible.

Anger surged through her. She threw on a jacket, pulled a dagger from her storage space, slipped into her heavy boots, and stormed out with Raven padding at her side.

Tyler was already there. He leaned over the railing at the stairwell, his face shadowed by the dim light.

Caroline’s voice cut through the chaos. “What’s going on? People are trying to sleep here!”

‘Something’s happening downstairs,” Tyler said.

Before he finished, a figure staggered into view.
