Bethany raced up alone to grab supplies. Her precious son, his wife, and her grandson weren’t with her.
Her plan was simple–eat first, share leftovers with her son and daughter–in–law, and hide some for her grandson.
But she messed up. If she’d known, she would’ve at least dragged her son along. Maybe then she wouldn’t have lost so badly in front of Caroline.
When Bethany lunged, Caroline was fast. She grabbed Bethany’s arm and twisted it hard.
That wasn’t the first time Bethany tried to cause trouble.
Caroline was fed up.
Annoyed, she reached for the knife at her back.
Bethany stumbled into someone else after Caroline shoved her. Her eyes locked on a pair of hands holding a bag of supplies.
She didn’t care who they belonged to. She only saw the bag and tried to snatch it.
“Give it to me! I’ve got kids and old people at home. If you don’t give it, you’re heartless!”
“Crazy witch! What are you doing? You want a fight?!” the person holding the bag snapped back.
“Do
you want an old woman to starve? You monster!” Bethany kept clutching the bag and yelling.
Everyone else tightened their grip on their own stuff and watched. No one stepped in.
A few people quietly slipped away when no one looked.
Then, a horrible scream rang out.
The man Bethany tried to rob finally snapped. His eyes turned red as he started hitting her.
It wasn’t like the young people earlier, who just shoved and kicked her a little. He was landing real punches, blow after blow to her head.
He almost seemed hooked on hitting her, cursing as he swung and never letting up.
Caroline frowned, studied him, and recognized the voice. It was Wayne Acosta, the man who’d

Kay curled up
close to Caroline, terrified. Caroline squeezed her hand and whispered, “Watch and learn. Stuff like this is going to happen a lot. Get used to it.”
Kay went still, then whispered in a shaky voice, “Don’t worry. I won’t be a burden.”
More people slipped away from the roof. Erica grabbed Charlie, her face tight with worry.
After one last scream, Bethany fell to the ground and didn’t move.
She was dead.
Wayne froze, realizing what he’d done. He staggered back and looked at the few people left. Panicked, he stammered, “I–I didn’t mean to! She tried to grab my stuff! I swear I didn’t mean it!”
Then, he ran.
In the end, only Caroline’s group, Erica, and Charlie stayed.
Caroline looked straight at Erica and Charlie. “Did you see this coming?”
Erica flinched under Caroline’s stare. “W–what do
you mean?”
Caroline snorted, grabbed Erica’s collar, and hauled her forward despite Erica’s protests.
Charlie stepped in, but Tyler and Kay held him back.
Caroline shoved Erica down toward Bethany’s lifeless body. Ignoring Erica’s screams, she nearly forced Erica’s face onto the corpse. “Look. If you mess with me, someone will die. Remember that. Don’t mess with us again.”
“Ahhh! I won’t! I swear I won’t!” Erica cried, turning her screams into sobs.
