With that thought, everything suddenly made sense.
Cedric had only brought Stella on as his assistant as a favor to Linus. Their relationship wasn’t at all what Lumina had imagined.
A tension inside Lumina eased, loosening its grip without warning. She looked back over her shoulder, instinctively searching for Cedric.
As she did, her eyes met his—deep, fathomless, and fixed on her.
He stood with the last rays of sunset behind him, the golden light painting a warm, dramatic backdrop that made him seem even more striking, bold and untamed.
For some reason, her heart skipped.
With unhurried, careless steps, Cedric closed the distance between them. He leaned in just above her, his voice low. “Still sulking?”
“I wasn’t sulking.” Lumina replied, slipping her arm through his.
...
Tonight’s party was hosted by Cedric’s niece, Kaelin Royce.
Lumina had met this wild child three times before.
The first time, Kaelin had been drag racing and totaled a Lamborghini. The second, she’d pushed her father’s mistress down a flight of stairs—causing the woman to lose her baby. The third time, after a fight with her family, she’d run off to the cemetery and spent the night there. Lumina and Cedric had been the ones to bring her home.
In Lumina’s mind, Kaelin was a legend—equal parts drama and daring. Yet, she couldn’t help but admire the girl’s fiery spirit and reckless freedom.
The moment Cedric stepped into the main hall, all eyes turned his way. He was, as always, the center of attention.
Guests clustered around, eager to talk business.
Lumina, reading the room, slipped easily into her role as his assistant, smiling sweetly as she turned them away.
“Sorry, Mr. Royce isn’t discussing work tonight. Please, enjoy yourselves.”
Cedric shot her a small, approving smile, wrapping his arm more firmly around her waist.
“Ms. Jardin, you’re getting more and more professional.”
A guest approached, bringing along a young woman. “Mr. Royce, this is my daughter, Tonia Locke. She just joined accounting. Would you mind exchanging numbers?”
