“Our family only hopes he’ll find a wife who’s truly his equal, someone from the right background. Two strong families working together is the best outcome.”
Lumina recognized the voice immediately. She clenched her fists in silence.
Cedric met the gaze with a calm, cool look. “Mom.”
His mother, Harriet, nodded in acknowledgment, her eyes sweeping over Lumina with a mixture of disdain and thinly veiled mockery.
Lumina knew Harriet had never approved of her. She quietly moved aside, keeping a respectful distance. After all, she was only Cedric’s girlfriend in name.
“It seems you’ve lost weight again lately,” Harriet said, her tone laced with concern as she looked at her son.
Cedric smiled. “How have you and Dad been?”
“Oh, your father’s just fine. He’s off vacationing in Bali and refuses to come home.”
As Harriet spoke, she shot a glance at Lumina, who sat quietly sipping her juice. “It’s been, what, over three years now? Are you really planning to keep her around forever?”
Cedric lowered his gaze and took a sip of wine, a careless smile playing at his lips. “It’s just a bit of fun.”
Harriet seemed relieved at his answer. “Then why drag it out? And why bring her to such an important event? You’re not getting any younger, and you were never the reckless type.”
“It’s not as simple as you think.” He rested a hand lightly on his mother’s shoulder. “She’s holding onto a few major contracts and clients for the company.”
That explanation was airtight, leaving no room for argument.
Harriet knew Cedric was thinking of the company. Her expression softened a little as she sighed. “You really spoiled her back then—promotions, raises, everything. But from now on, you need to start taking back control, do you hear me?”
Cedric just sipped his wine, saying nothing.
