Droplets immediately blossomed across Cedric’s notebook, the ink blurring in watery, feathered patterns.
He frowned, displeased, and set his pen down. “What’s the matter with you? Can’t you even manage pouring a cup of coffee without making a mess?”
But when he looked up, it wasn’t a familiar face before him. It was someone he didn’t recognize, eyes wide with panic.
...
Lumina was so busy wrapping up transition work that she hadn’t even stopped for lunch. When she finally looked up from her mountain of tasks, she was startled to realize it was nearly three in the afternoon.
She rubbed her aching neck, suddenly noticing that Tonia still hadn’t returned.
Stepping out of her office, Lumina flagged down a colleague. “Have you seen Tonia anywhere?”
“She hasn’t been around for a while. I thought she was with you. I actually have some files I need to hand over to her.”
A strange feeling crept into Lumina’s chest. Could Tonia still be in Cedric’s office?
She patted her coworker’s shoulder. “Got it. Just email me the notes on the handover and I’ll relay them to her later.”
Fastening her ID badge, Lumina strode toward the executive elevator.
The upper floor was eerily quiet. As she approached Cedric’s office, she could hear the faint sound of a woman’s muffled sobs from inside.
Startled, she immediately pushed open the door. There, by the floor-to-ceiling windows, stood Tonia, tears shimmering on her cheeks.
