Cedric said nothing, listening in stony silence as she stumbled through her frantic explanation.
The air inside the car felt suffocating, so heavy that it was hard to breathe.
Lumina’s voice trembled. She tried to explain, but her mind was a mess, spinning out of control. In all her years on the job, she’d never once made a serious mistake. She never imagined her one fatal flaw would be a gift from her own father.
“This was my fault. I accept that. For any mistakes at work, I’ll take whatever punishment or scolding you want to give. But for what I haven’t done, I swear I never covered for him!”
Cedric pressed his lips together, his fingers interlocked and resting loosely on his knees. He seemed lost in thought, his expression unreadable.
After a long pause, he finally looked up, his eyes cold and calm as he fixed her with his gaze. “If that’s true, then tell me, why are you so desperate to leave Banyan Town?”
Lumina hadn’t expected him to make that connection, not now, not like this.
For a split second, she almost blurted out the truth about her pregnancy, desperate to prove her innocence. But when she met his skeptical eyes, the words caught in her throat. She simply couldn’t say it.
Maybe last night’s tenderness had been nothing but a fleeting dream he’d allowed her. This was the real him: ruthless, ready to push her off a cliff at any moment and watch her shatter.
What would be the point of explaining, anyway? Would a man as suspicious as Cedric ever believe her?
If she told him the truth, she’d lose everything—her reputation, and the children she hadn’t even dared to hope for.
When she stayed silent for too long, Cedric’s suspicion only deepened. He was convinced she was hiding something—some shameful secret she shared with Yadiel.
Just how close were Lumina and Yadiel, really? The more he thought about it, the less he could control his thoughts.
