Lumina couldn’t understand how he could still manage a smile at a time like this.
Frustration bubbled up inside her. “If you keep pushing yourself like this, one day you’re going to destroy your health!”
He just coughed a few times, his tone still light and distant. “If I die, isn’t that what you wanted? You’d finally be free to leave Banyan Town.”
As he spoke, his fathomless eyes locked onto hers, searching her face for any hint of concern or reluctance.
He was this sick, and yet he still had the energy to say such pointless things. Lumina was exasperated. She marched over to him, lips pursed in annoyance. “You’re right. I don’t care. In fact, if you died, it’d be perfect. I could finally have some peace and freedom!”
Hearing her words, Cedric’s coughing only grew worse, so violent that flecks of blood appeared.
The sight startled Lumina. For three years, she’d lived under his protective shadow. He never let her see even a trace of weakness.
Cedric sighed, took her wrist, and gently pulled her closer. He rested his chin on her shoulder, muttering softly, “You really are heartless.”
Listening to his hoarse, nearly inaudible voice, Lumina’s heart softened despite herself. Her eyes grew red-rimmed. In a low voice, she said, “Let’s go to the hospital.”
He gave a faint cough.
Lumina hesitated, then added, “I’ll go with you.”
A slight smile tugged at his lips. He stroked the back of her head with his palm, and in a voice barely above a whisper, replied, “Alright.”
Cedric finally relented, but still refused to call an ambulance and cause a scene. So Hilton drove the three of them—Cedric, Lumina, and Nancy—to the hospital.
Cedric sat bundled in his overcoat, his eyes unfocused, a sheen of sweat glistening on his forehead.
Underneath his coat, Lumina clung tightly to his large hand, her fingertips gently tracing the veins on its back.
When they arrived, Cedric was quickly admitted to a private room.
Lumina happened to see Hilton quietly pass a thick envelope to the doctor, no doubt asking him to keep things discreet.
After reviewing Dr. Harding’s medical notes, the doctor began the IV drip, sighing with a hint of reproach. “Why did you wait so long to bring him in?”
Lumina kept her chin up, saying nothing.
