I Bought the exiled king (by Natalie Winter) novel Chapter 82

Chapter 82

Valencia

I took a step back as they all gathered around me, staring at me with contempt and a scowl on all their faces.

I had never really introduced myself as the Blessed One before, but somehow that word slipped out of my mouth. As if my mind had already accepted that, and my body was just catching on.

The tallest man continued to march forward, and I kept retreating until my back hit something. I looked up to see that there was a giant tree trunk behind me.

The man looked at me with disdain and asked.

So you have been hiding in that castle all day, eating and sleeping nicely while we are still living in fear. What use are of you to us if you can not do the one thing they say you can?

He asked, his teeth gritting.

I had not taken a good look at the man clearly before, but he was broad and appeared to be a leader of this gang, possibly some alpha.

But I thought there were no werewolves here, just humans.

Who said what about me?I asked, mustering some courage. This whole thing was truly confusing to me.

The tall man pointed in the direction of the castle and then at the temple.

The Crone visits the villages sometimes to cleanse our homes and bless us. Do you know what curse has been plaguing these lands for a time and what hell we go through every day?

The man said, spitting out saliva as he spoke vehemently. The others only stood beside him like loyal bystanders, watching whatever he had to say

silence.

I shook my head.

I don’t,I answered honestly.

I am Igor, and I have been trying to save my village and its people from the plague of these horrible creatures lurking in the Forbidden Forest. King Aecidus is too busy trying to save his bloodline to worry about the worries of the common man.

Another man, who had been standing beside him, finally mustered the courage to talk.

We all have lost someone we knew to the creatures in the woods. They snatch our loved ones right in front of our eyes and drag them back into the Forest and kill them. We have been waiting for some relief from the King, but he continues to ignore us for his own selfish interests. We also heard that they finally found the Blessed One. So now you can save us all from our misery.

He looked at me hopefully, and so did the rest of the crowd.

How?I asked in confusion.

The tall guy grew impatient and muttered with a scowl.

What do you mean by how? You are the Blessed One! You are supposed to do your magic and lift the curse from these lands. Make these horrible creatures disappear or kill them for all I care.”/

They all began demanding I do that right away, raising their voices. Igor looked at my hand and grabbed my wrist immediately.

Get the creatures to leave us alone! Do your magic now and save us all.

He said, and the others agreed to it as he began dragging me towards the forest edge.

No, wait, I tried to explain, but they wouldn’t listen to me.

Do your duty and protect us!Igor kept pulling me forward, ignoring my pleas to let me go.

They had dragged me towards the edge of the forest, and we were standing just outside the borders, the place from where the Elorin kingdom ended and the Forbidden Forest began.

thad run into the forest once, and that experience had been horrifying.

I had not met any horrible creatures thankfully, but I didn’t want to push my luck.

Wait, my magic doesn’t work like that,I blurted out without thinking, and that made Igor stop.

What do you mean?He raised an eyebrow, but his grip on my hand had loosened a little.

Shit. I had to cook up some story, fast.

Youyou have already sacrificed someone today. The creatures are sated. They wont show up now even if I try to. And I can’t waste precious magic ke that. I can save it and use it for the next time these creatures try to attack you.”

Even I wasn’t sure what story I was crafting, but I was desperate, and so were these people.

Igor looked at me thoughtfully.

Is that so?

I nodded, and he let go of my hand. I rubbed the slightly sore wrist as he looked back at the crumpled body of the boy he had just sacrificed.

That boyhe was beyond saving. He was marked by those creatures. And when they catch scent of their prey, they dont stopt anything to ge they want. You might think I was cruel, but if I had to sacrifice one life to save thousands, I would do that again.

Igor said, though I had never demanded an explanation.

This kingdom was cruel, and I had not heard about these creatures lurking in the forest much so I had no idea what was the extent of danger they posed. I had been too focussed on the courts and Killian’s siblings to wonder about anything else.

But he was still a young boy, a poor helpless boy that you threw away to his death,I couldn’t stop myself from saying that.

Igor’s scowl returned, and he loomed over me, the fat brows on his face twitching.

And as I said, he was marked by them. There was no saving him. And if you want to save the others from the same fate as him, you better use your magic next time.

I blinked.

How was suddenly saving their village or its people my responsibility?

I was at a loss for words and didn’t know what to answer, so I only nodded as they all walked away. I stood by the edge of the forest, my eyes still going to the grizzly sight of the boy’s crumpled body lying on the grass.

I couldn’t believe I had seen someone die and couldn’t do anything to save him. I looked down at my hands, wondering if these could really do any magic. If I were really Morwenna’s relative and why the magic was evading me for so long?

I had my hands raised in front of my eyes and was looking at them when I caught a movement in the forest. Suddenly, I heard the leaves of the bushes

rustle.

And then there were a pair of huge eyes suddenly over the boy’s head.
