It was late, and Arielle and Adrian didn’t want to disturb Rhea, so they didn’t want the police to
contact her.
Arielle told the police that they had an uncle. They didn’t know his number, but they knew his name -George Snider.
How many George Sniders could the Draventh police know? Only one.
Before calling George, the police even showed the kids his photo for confirmation.
Once George arrived, the chief of police personally greeted him. “Mr. Snider, please come in.”
“There’s no need. I’ll take them with me,” George said.
The two children grabbed his hands on either side, and together, they left the police station.
It was nearly midnight, and George had nowhere else to take them, so he brought them to his private
residence in Draventh.
At home, he asked, “Do you want something to eat?”
“We’re not hungry, Uncle George.” Arielle shook her head.
George’s tall figure almost overshadowed the children. He smiled gently and asked, “Can you wash up by yourselves?”
“Yes!” they chorused.
George followed and watched them as they brushed their teeth, washed their faces, and went to bed
without a fuss.
“By the way, the police said you told them that you don’t know Lauren?” George leaned against the
doorframe.
Arielle blinked. “Yeah, we don’t really know her.”
George nodded slowly. “Alright, then. Sleep well.”
After that, he closed the door, picked up his phone, and sent a text to Rhea. It read, “Carter’s two kids are with me. Come pick them up when you wake up.”
It was late, so he assumed that Rhea had gone to sleep.
Not long after the text was sent, Rhea’s call came through. “Arielle and Adrian are with you?”
George lit a cigarette. “Yeah. The police called me to pick them up. They said thatCarter was in an

accident.”
Rhea couldn’t comprehend the situation. “Then how did the kids end up with you?”
“Well, I’m their ‘uncle‘.”
Rhea was silent for a second. “I’m so sorry for the trouble. I’ll have someone pick them up.”
George’s gaze darkened slightly. “They just went to bed. There’s no rush.”
A sudden quiet settled between them.
“You-”
“You-”
They spoke at the same time.
Rhea said, “You go first.”
George’s chuckle wavered. “Are you so afraid of dealing with me?”
“No. I just feel that I’ve caused you so much trouble.”
A flash of irritation rose in George. “I’m not afraid of being troubled by you.”
Rhea froze on the other end of the line, fidgeting with her fingers. After a long while, she let out a small laugh. “I’ll take you out to dinner once I get through this busy period.”
Her tone was friendly, almost as if she were speaking to a peer rather than her brother’s close friend.
“Alright,” George replied hoarsely. “I’ll wait.”
Having waited all these years, he figured that a few extra days wouldn’t matter.
