Rhea rested against the bench’s armrest, not taking the consent form. She said, “Let’s wait a little

while.”

The doctor was confused. “What for?”

“For him to wake up.”

“That’ll be too late!”

Rhea looked up calmly. “I’m his family, aren’t I?”

The doctor paused, as if he suddenly understood what she meant.

“Transfer him to a ward first,” Rhea said as she rose.

The doctor had no say over the patient’s matters and could only handle the admission.

In the ward, Carter had already been moved to a bed by the time Rhea arrived. She had barely sat when Chloe helped Lauren in, followed by Peter.

After Lauren’s accident, the hospital had contacted Chloe, who was listed in Lauren’s contacts as family, and Peter, whom she had recently spoken to.

Peter had just arrived.

When he saw Rhea, his expression was slightly awkward. “R–Rhea.”

Lauren, surprised by his respectful tone, looked at Peter intently. He was always badmouthing Rhea in private, so why was he suddenly being so respectful?

But Lauren didn’t have time to dwell on it. Her injuries weren’t severe. She had fainted and received a few stitches on her forehead. Upon waking, she had come straight to see Carter.

She asked the nurse, “Why hasn’t the surgery started yet?”

“The patient’s family hasn’t signed. We can’t operate without consent,” the nurse replied.

Lauren looked at Rhea, who was sitting on the couch and fiddling with her phone. Dressed in black, she exuded a cold and distant presence like that of a cedar tree in winter.

Lauren exhaled sharply. “Rhea, Carter’s badly hurt! He needs surgery now!”

At the exact moment of the accident, Carter had shielded Lauren, which was why he ended up so seriously injured. He had seriously brought this on himself.

Rhea slowly raised her head. “I don’t want to sign right now. Is that a problem?”

“You’re doing this on purpose?” Chloe scolded. “You’re so cruel! What if he ends up disabled? Lauren will suffer!”

Her words made Peter frown. A flicker of disapproval stirred in his chest.

The doctor approached at that moment. “Who are you? Are you the patient’s family?”

Chloe immediately replied, “Doctor, we’re his family too!”

“What is your relation to the patient?” the doctor pressed.

Chloe thought for a second, then grabbed Lauren’s hand. “She’s my granddaughter, and she had two children with him!”

Puzzled, the doctor looked at Rhea, then turned to Lauren. “Ex–wife?”

Lauren opened her mouth but couldn’t say a single word. She wasn’t even Carter’s ex–wife.

Chloe panicked. “Who we are doesn’t matter! What matters is getting him into surgery!”

She didn’t want Lauren to marry a disabled man.
