Chapter 199
“Y–You’re hoping Carter dies?” Lauren couldn’t believe it. “He’s your husband!”
“Oh, so you know that he’s my husband.” Rhea crossed her legs and smiled down at Lauren, who was kneeling in front of her. “It’s too bad I don’t have the cash to cover his medical bills. He’ll just have to handle it himself when he wakes up.”
Lauren shot back, “You’re the Ravelle family’s heiress! How could you not have money? How can you not save him?”
Rhea raised an eyebrow. “The Ravelle family isn’t obligated to save him. How about this? If you care so much, you pay for it. I’ll gladly sign the consent forms.”
Lauren gritted her teeth. She had just asked the doctor. Carter’s injuries were severe, and the surgery would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Since they had reunited, Carter hadn’t given her any money. Her own savings…
Slowly, she stood, looking aggrieved. “If you won’t save him, I will!”
With that, Lauren limped off to cover the medical bills herself. The paperwork took over 20 minutes.
By the time she returned, Carter was finally stirring awake.
Lauren immediately rushed to his side, tears streaming down her face. “Carter, you’re finally awake! You scared me half to death…”
“Don’t cry… I’m okay…” Carter mumbled, dizzy and groggy.
Rhea, sitting quietly nearby, watched their interaction with a detached calm.
“Carter, when you were unconscious, your so–called wife refused to sign the consent forms! The doctor said you might be permanently disabled if you missed the window, but she didn’t care! It was Lauren who finally paid the bills!” Chloe said indignantly.
Carter’s gaze flicked around, ultimately resting on Rhea on the couch. A chill ran through him.
Rhea didn’t look worried. Instead, she smiled faintly. “You’re awake? Then sign the papers yourself.”
“Did you really have to wait until Carter woke up to sign? I know you resent me, but I’ve kneeled and begged as you wanted, so why…” Lauren accused.
Rhea had forced Lauren to kneel and still refused to sign?
Carter’s anger flared. “You-”
Just then, Peter interrupted, “Lauren, when did Rhea make you kneel?”

Lauren froze. “Peter, what… S–She wouldn’t sign, so I had to beg her!”
Peter’s expression was flat. “She didn’t say anything. You’ve been putting on a show all by yourself.”
He couldn’t stand Lauren’s dramatics any longer. The more he watched, the more he felt like a fool for his past self.
Rhea was quite surprised by Peter’s frankness. She couldn’t believe that he had actually spoken up
for her.
Peter turned his face away. “Don’t pin everything on Rhea. Whether she signs or not is one thing, but kneeling was entirely your choice.”
After saying that, he finally felt a little of the tightness in his chest ease.
A light chuckle broke the tension. Everyone turned to look at Rhea.
