Carter immediately barked, “Transfer me! Now! Back to Colburn!”
Peter frowned. “The surgery’s already underway. Why rush back to Colburn now? Will you even make it in time? Do you want to lose your legs?”
Carter glared at Rhea. “It’s better to risk my legs than die!”
He was involved in a car accident immediately after leaving the Ravelle residence. There was no way he could believe that it had nothing to do with Rhea.
“I’m insisting on a transfer!” Carter demanded. With that, the hospital had no choice but to comply.
As they left, Rhea slowly strolled over. “Remember, Carter, the transfer was your choice. Don’t blame me if something goes wrong with your legs later.”
She stepped into her luxury car. “By the way, make sure you properly thank Ms. Thayer. After all, she didn’t even have money to live on, but suddenly came up with hundreds of thousands of dollars for your surgery. She sure hid that cash well.”
After saying that, she drove off into the crisp autumn air, a smile on her face.
Lauren’s gaze flickered.
However, Carter was still burning with anger. He could hardly believe that Rhea could be so indifferent to his pain.
“Did you report it to the police?” Carter gritted his teeth. “Who hit me?”
Lauren shook her head. “They said that there’s no way to track them. The car was gone anyone noticed.”
She believed that it had to be Rhea or maybe Nathan.

The next day, in a hospital in Colburn, Carter lay in bed recovering from surgery.
The moment he woke up, he asked Lauren, “By the way, where did you get the money for my surgery?”
Even though the hospital refunded it, the amount was still significant for Lauren.
“I–I borrowed it from Peter,” Lauren blurted.
Peter happened to be there visiting.

“Thanks for yesterday,” Carter said.
Peter set down the fruit basket, confused. “For what?”
“Thanks for-”
“Carter!” Lauren cut him off. “The doctor said you need to rest, so focus on resting. We’ll ask the doctor about your condition, okay?”
With that, Lauren leaned on her crutch and tugged Peter’s sleeve, leading him toward the door.
At the door, Peter instinctively tried to break free.
Lauren noticed his resistance. “Peter, did I do something wrong to upset you?”
“No,” Peter replied flatly.
Lauren parted her lips. “Peter, can you do me a favor?”
Peter frowned. “What?”
“I…” Lauren sighed. “I sold some of the jewelry my mother left me to pay for Carter’s surgery. But I didn’t want him to feel guilty, so I told him that I borrowed it from you.”
He instinctively didn’t believe her. “What jewelry? Where did you sell it?”
Lauren was surprised by his questioning. “What’s wrong with you, Peter? Why are you being so hostile? I did all this for Carter. After everything that’s happened to me, do you still not believe that I truly love him?”
Peter, who had partially believed that she had sold her mother’s jewelry, now doubted her completely. After all, he had seen her play the fragile, deceptive act with Carter firsthand.
“I don’t know if you love him,” Peter said, turning away. “You know what you’ve done yourself.”
