Marcus exclaimed, “You’ve been tricked!”

Carter’s brow twitched. “Tricked? What do you mean?”

“You haven’t heard?” Marcus continued, “Rhea publicly told the reporters today that George is her new boyfriend! They’ve already gone to the Ravelle residence!”

That was exactly what the reporters had said to Carter earlier.

“No way!”

Carter set down his teacup. “That’s impossible! Liam promised me that once Lauren apologized publicly, we would stage a fake divorce, place all the blame on her, and Rhea and I would come out as the victims. No one would have betrayed the marriage, and we would have remarried afterward.”

Marcus laughed. “You actually believed him?”

A creeping dread washed over Carter, and his palms grew cold.

It was all part of Liam’s scheme? No way.

Liam had repeatedly taken him to events and introduced him to top figures across industries. He wondered if it had all been a lie.

Carter steadied himself. “You’re overthinking. Even if Liam schemes, he wouldn’t target me. After all, if my reputation suffered, it would reflect on Rhea. Besides, I’m the one she loves the most. He’s protective of her. He wouldn’t harm me.”

He knew that some of that was self–deception.

After saying that, he jumped up urgently. “I’m going to the Ravelle residence.”

Despite his outward denial, he felt unsettled inside. He hurriedly left and got into the car.

“To the Ravelle residence, now!” he commanded.

Meanwhile, after the reporters left with Carter, Grace appeared.

Lauren, hoping to slip away, was blocked. “Ms. Huber?”

Grace approached her.

Lauren forced down her resentment toward Carter. A subtle flicker of anticipation stirred within her. “Carter sent you, didn’t he? He must have his reasons, right?”

Lauren wasn’t willing to give up on Carter unless absolutely necessary. After all, her most significant leverage was being the mother of his two children.

Moreover, he had personally terminated her pregnancy. She was sure that he felt sorry for her.

Grace held out a bank card. “Mr. Jamison asked me to give this to you.”

Lauren’s hands shook as she reached for it. “Did he say anything else?”

Grace met her gaze. “He said to sort out your feelings and start living properly from now on.”

Live properly from now on?

Lauren’s knees nearly buckled.

Was he giving up on her completely? Was he going to care for Rhea and leave her entirely behind? Was this money meant as a breakup settlement?

Without saying another word, Grace turned and walked away.

The message was delivered. How Lauren interpreted it was her own problem.
