Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 104

Inside the luxury apartment.

Kristen barely paused at the door before heading straight to the living room and pulling open the drawer beneath the coffee table. There were several phones stashed inside. She grabbed one and dialed Marian’s number.

It didn’t even ring twice before Marian picked up.

“Kristen?” Marian’s voice was hesitant, guilt woven through every syllable.

“Marian, why did you leave so suddenly?” Kristen’s tone was as warm and gentle as ever, full of concern. “Clive told me you had some kind of emergency back home. He wanted me to check in and see if there’s anything we can help with. Please, don’t be shy. After all…”

Kristen glanced at herself in the mirror, smoothing her hair. Her eyes were cool and proud, but her voice stayed sweet as honey.

“You and my mom are basically family, and Clive thinks of you as one of us.”

That only made Marian feel worse.

“Kristen, you and the Salmerons have always been so good to me. I...” Marian trailed off, eyes landing on her grandkids racing around the living room. The memory of Amelia flashed through her mind, sending a shiver down her spine. She swallowed back what she wanted to say.

“I really do just have some family stuff to handle. Maybe I should return the extra money you’ve been giving me every month?”

Kristen’s perfect face didn’t move, but her eyes turned cold for a split second.

She’d placed Marian in the Salmeron household for a reason: to keep tabs on every little thing Timmy and Penny did, so she could always swoop in at the right moment, especially when they felt lonely or lost. That was how she’d become so important to the kids—Penny, especially.

Marian was the perfect pawn.

“No need, that was just a little something from me. If you really have something urgent back home, I won’t keep you.” Kristen’s voice was all understanding and kindness.

Marian sighed. “Kristen, you’re truly beautiful inside and out. I hope you and Clive end up together—you two are made for each other!”

Kristen let her lips curl into a practiced smile, but before she could respond, Marian lowered her voice, a warning slipping out: “Kristen, be careful with that Amelia.”

She didn’t dare say more. Mumbling something about needing to make dinner for the grandkids, Marian hung up in a hurry.
