Monday morning, Amelia and Clive headed to work together.
With their regular driver out, Clive’s assistant Aiden took over and pulled up right on time. He jumped out to open the back door, but when he caught sight of Amelia in her sharp business outfit, he froze for a second—then snapped out of it, embarrassed by his own staring, and quickly looked away as he held the door open.
On the way to the office, Aiden tried to make conversation. “It’s nice seeing you both going to work together again.”
Amelia gave him a polite smile. “Aiden, you can just call me Ms. Sadinton during work hours.”
The word “Mrs.” grated on her nerves now—only her career and competence mattered to her anymore.
Clive, half-absorbed in his phone, looked up when he heard her. Her makeup was understated, her hair pulled up in a loose twist—she didn’t look much different from five years ago, but something about her felt different. She had a quiet strength now, something magnetic. He couldn’t help but stare.
“Amelia, you look beautiful today.”
He meant it. He reached over and tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
She felt the warmth of his fingers linger a little too long on her cheek, the gesture too intimate for the small space of the car. There was no escaping it, and dodging would just make things awkward.
So she dropped her gaze and gently pulled his hand away, a little shy but half-joking. “Stop it.”
She couldn’t help but feel annoyed with herself for playing along.
Clive just grinned and took her hand anyway, holding it tight all the way to the office.
Amelia just stared out the window. Great.
Aiden, watching through the rearview mirror, beamed like he’d just witnessed a scene from his favorite drama. Seven years of marriage—maybe they really were finding their way back to each other.
As soon as the car stopped, Amelia practically jumped out, worried Clive would try something else if she lingered. She hurried toward the building.
“Clive, I’m going straight to R&D to get ready for the presentation.”
Her obvious rush made Clive chuckle. He took his time, hands in his pockets, following her in.
Inside the lobby, someone called out.
“Clive…”
Amelia was a few steps ahead and immediately spotted Kristen standing off to the side, looking like she wanted to be rescued.
Amelia didn’t even blink. She walked right past without a glance, scanned into the building, and disappeared.
The R&D department had its own elevator, right off the main lobby. Amelia stepped inside, and as the doors began to close, she caught sight of Clive stopping to talk to Kristen. Whatever Kristen said made him frown, and then he turned, looking right at Amelia, like he wanted to say something.
