“You should get going. Don’t keep them waiting—Timmy and Penny have school tomorrow.”
“It’s fine. A few more minutes won’t matter.”
Amelia checked in with Mrs. Salmeron about her medication and gently took her pulse. She knew what to do. Turning to Tara, she said, “Cut those two herbs in the prescription by half and keep making the tea for another two weeks.”
Once everything was settled, Amelia finally left.
Mrs. Salmeron watched her walk away, the warmth in her eyes fading into worry—and a flicker of anger.
“That boy Clive, always defending that fox! My poor Amelia, she must be so upset.”
Tara hurried over, patting her back to calm her down and bringing her some tea.
“Tara!” Mrs. Salmeron grabbed her hand, lowering her voice. “I want you to look into this Kristen. Find out everything.”
She just couldn’t shake the feeling that Kristen wasn’t as innocent as she seemed.
Mrs. Salmeron had seen Amelia’s feelings for Clive all these years, and she’d gone out of her way to bring them together. Her precious granddaughter-in-law—she’d protect her no matter what.

On the drive home, Clive was behind the wheel while Amelia sat in the passenger seat. Timmy and Penny were in the back.
Timmy was on the phone with a friend from the coding competition, talking excitedly about the tweaks Amelia had helped him with.
“Timmy, I knew you were good, but this is insane!” his friend said. Judging by his voice, he was probably a few years older.
Timmy glanced at Amelia in the front. She looked like she was napping, so he whispered, a little proud, “I learned it from someone really amazing.”
Amelia’s lips twitched up in a smile as she pretended to sleep.
Penny was busy finishing her homework on her tablet.
“Dad, I sent the photos to Ms. Arnold,” she said.
“Okay,” Clive replied, barely looking up.
