Rachel was practically yelling into the phone, her words tumbling out in a rush. “Amelia, you need to get here, now! The minute I walked in this morning, I saw they’d set up a whole new R&D Department Two right across from us. Kristen’s already the manager—and she’s not just stealing our people, she’s after our lab equipment too!”
Amelia’s face tightened. She lowered her voice, calm but urgent. “Give me five minutes. I’m on my way.”
She raced back to the department. The elevator doors slid open and right across the hall, what used to be an empty office was now cleared out and already had a big, shiny ‘R&D Department Two’ sign on the door. People were hustling back and forth, carrying boxes and equipment inside.
A few employees by the window caught sight of her, but immediately turned away, pretending they didn’t see anything. Guilt was written all over their faces.
Amelia’s eyes went cold.
Clive really had gone all-out for Kristen. Just one night, and he’d set her up with a whole new department.
She pushed those thoughts aside and headed for the lab, but before she got there, Lena’s sharp, mocking voice echoed out.
“Rachel, you really are Amelia’s loyal puppy, aren’t you? You think you can stop us? Move it. The lab belongs to both departments now! There’s just the two of you, and you’re hogging all the equipment. What are we supposed to use in R&D Two?”
Rachel’s face was red with anger, tears threatening to spill. “You’re being completely unreasonable! You know Amelia’s working on something critical. If you take our equipment, how are we supposed to do our research?” She clung to the doorframe, blocking Lena and the two security guards standing behind her. Rachel was small, but she wasn’t backing down.
Lena rolled her eyes, full of contempt. “What are you all waiting for? Get her out of the way.”
The guards stepped forward, but then a cool, commanding voice rang out.
“Stop.”
