Rachel was about ready to explode at the sight of these two-faced cowards. Just yesterday, every one of them had been acting all meek and mild in front of her boss, barely daring to breathe. Now, here they were, switching sides the second the wind changed.
“You guys are unbelievable. Grown men, and this is how you act? My boss’s project is—”
“Rachel.” Amelia’s hand landed gently on her arm, pulling her back before she could say anything she’d regret.
A glint of calculation flashed through Kristen’s eyes. She looked at Amelia’s calm, beautiful face and stepped forward, putting on her sweetest voice. “Amelia, don’t worry. I just need to borrow your supercomputer for two weeks. I won’t touch anything else in the lab, I promise.”
Amelia frowned, not bothering to hide it.
Rachel’s anger, barely under control, flared right back up. “No way!” she snapped before anyone else could react.
That computer held every bit of confidential data from Amelia’s research. There was no way she’d let Kristen near it.
Kristen didn’t even bother replying. Instead, she gave Lena a look. Lena immediately picked up on it and started shouting, “What are you all standing around for? Get in there and bring out the computer! Don’t hold up R&D’s work!”
Backed by Salmeron’s orders, the security guards didn’t hesitate. They rushed in and dragged Rachel out of the way. If Amelia hadn’t caught her, Rachel would have crashed headfirst into the wall.
Rachel tried to push back, but Amelia held her arm tight. “Boss!”
Amelia just shook her head, her eyes calm. There was nothing they could do right now. With Clive bending over backwards for Kristen, the whole company had turned against them.
In the end, Rachel could only watch helplessly as the lab’s supercomputer was wheeled away to Kristen’s side.
“Boss, what are we going to do?” Rachel’s voice trembled, tears welling up in her eyes. “How can they get away with this? Kristen is such a snake. She totally did this on purpose!”
That supercomputer was everything to them.
“Hey, stop crying.” Amelia wiped away her tears and pulled her into the office. After closing the door, her expression turned playful. “Let me show you something.”
Amelia opened up her regular-looking laptop. Her fingers flew across the keys, lines of code flashing by so fast Rachel almost got dizzy. Then the screen changed, and Rachel’s jaw dropped.
“It’s our project data! All of it!” she gasped, practically bouncing with relief.
It was exactly the same as what had been on the supercomputer.
