Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 135

When Amelia finally woke up, she was in the hospital. Clive was already gone, airlifted by the Salmeron family straight to a private clinic, where the city’s top surgeons were waiting for him.

A doctor came in to check on her, still shaking his head in disbelief. “You’re lucky, you know. That wound on your right thigh—if it had gone just half an inch deeper, it would’ve hit a nerve. You could have been paralyzed.” He glanced at her, almost accusing. “Didn’t it hurt? How did you even stay conscious?”

Eight years.

Amelia absently ran her fingers over the outside of her right thigh, feeling the long scar through her jeans. It was still there—maybe six inches—proof of what she’d risked for love once upon a time.

That night, Clive had leaned over her, his voice warm against her ear. What had he whispered back then? Amelia’s thoughts swirled, and for a moment, she could almost hear twenty-year-old Clive again.

“Amelia, why are you so good to me?” His voice had been rough with emotion. “I promise, I’ll never let you down.”

Back then, he was always telling her how amazing she was. He made her feel special—so much that she never noticed what he didn’t say. Not once, in all those years, did Clive ever tell her he loved her.

Pushing the memory aside, Amelia gathered her things and headed down to the front desk to pick up her company car keys. She’d checked yesterday and was told they’d be ready for her today.

The receptionist typed something on the computer, then looked up with a wince. “I’m really sorry, Ms. Sadinton, but Ms. Watts already sent someone to pick up the keys this afternoon. If you want, you can put in a request for another car with Salmeron. Since you’re the only R&D manager, we just have the one vehicle assigned.”

So even the perks that were supposed to be hers—Clive gave them all to Kristen. She could feel the pity in the receptionist’s eyes.

Amelia just managed a polite smile. “Thanks for your help.” She turned and walked out, planning to call a ride and just go home.

Of course, rush hour meant every car in the city was booked. She stared at the ride app—seventeen people ahead of her in the queue. Her head throbbed.

To make things worse, it started to rain. Amelia glanced up at the heavy clouds rolling across the sky, already resigning herself to getting soaked.

Just then, her phone chimed. A new message popped up.

It was Diana’s alt account.

Selfhelper: Done with work?

Amelia replied: Yeah, standing by the curb trying to get a ride. No luck—might just take the subway.

She added a crying meme for good measure.

Selfhelper: Go back inside, wait for me. Two minutes.

Wait, wasn’t Diana out of town filming? How did she even know it was raining?

Amelia: How do you know it’s raining over here?
