Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 140

In Penny’s eyes, Amelia looked a complete mess right then. Her clothes were all wrinkled, her hair was a little wild, and she wasn’t wearing any makeup at all. Compared to Momma Kristen, who practically glowed under the spotlights, Amelia might as well have been from another planet.

So embarrassing. Penny just wanted to disappear.

Amelia didn’t pick up on the other kids’ whispers. She thought Penny was throwing a fit just because she was blocking her view of Kristen.

“I brought you some clean clothes and socks, honey.” Amelia didn’t let Penny’s bad mood get to her. This was her daughter, after all. Penny was still a kid, just a little spoiled by the Salmerons and Kristen lately.

Amelia was willing to give her time to adjust, and she’d do her best to help her grow. As long as it wasn’t about something that really mattered, she could handle Penny’s little moods.

She sat down beside Penny and pulled out a fresh pair of socks from her bag, patiently slipping them onto Penny’s feet.

Penny’s pout was so big you could hang a bottle on it. She glanced at Amelia’s bag—big, plain, and honestly kind of embarrassing. It looked nothing like Momma Kristen’s sparkly little purse, which was so pretty it almost hurt to look at.

Why couldn’t Momma Kristen be her real mom?

“All right, Penny, let’s go change your clothes, okay?” Amelia reached out a hand, but Penny just looked even grumpier. Then her eyes suddenly lit up as she spotted someone behind Amelia.

“Daddy!”

Amelia turned and saw Clive coming their way, tall and steady. He bent down and scooped Penny up as she ran to him. Penny quickly whispered something in Clive’s ear, cupping her hands around her mouth.

Clive frowned a little. “Penny!”

But Penny just clung to his neck, all sweet and pleading. “Please, Daddy, please?”

Clive looked helplessly at Amelia. “Can you wait here for a bit? Penny wants me to help her get changed.”

Amelia’s eyes dimmed a little, but she handed over the clothes anyway.

Clive didn’t take them right away. Instead, he fished a small, elegant gift box out of his pocket and handed it to her.

“Amelia, I got you something. I thought you’d like it.”

Amelia took it, barely glancing at the box. “Thanks. Where’s Timmy?” That was all she cared about.

Clive pointed down a little side path. “Timmy’s at Nostalgia with a friend. Just stay here and I’ll send him over.”

But Amelia had no intention of just sitting there waiting around.

It was obvious nobody wanted her here tonight.

She’d only come to drop off a few things for the kids, and once that was done, she was out.
