Tonight, the room was packed with the kind of people who grew up with everything handed to them—money, power, family names that opened every door.
Clive’s marriage wasn’t a secret. Years ago, he’d married Amelia, the genius everyone at Baybridge University talked about. Their wedding was a huge deal, splashed all over the news. Back then, being with Amelia made Clive look even better. But that was five years ago. Amelia had disappeared from the public eye, and nobody really remembered her now. Besides, tonight was important—there were a few heirs from big families Clive was hoping to impress.
The problem? Amelia showed up tonight looking completely out of place.
Clive clenched his wine glass, face blank, and knocked back his drink in one swallow.
If he stepped up now and admitted she was his wife, everyone in the room would mock him. Even worse, the Salmeron family’s reputation would get dragged through the mud.
He thought it over and decided to stay quiet.
Still, he couldn’t just stand there and watch Amelia get torn apart by all those judgmental stares.
He caught Cameron’s eye across the room.
They’d known each other forever. Cameron knew what Clive wanted—he was supposed to step in and help Amelia out.
Maybe any other night, Cameron would’ve done it just to keep the peace.
But tonight was different. It was the perfect chance to get back at Amelia for everything she’d done to Kristen.
Cameron watched Amelia standing alone in the spotlight, the center of everyone’s attention, and smirked to himself. She had no one to blame but herself after the way she’d treated Kristen.
Amelia noticed Clive’s cold, distant expression and felt a wave of icy disappointment wash over her.
She knew Clive never loved her.
But after all these years—after risking her life for him, after raising two kids with him—if he had even a little bit of heart, he wouldn’t treat her like this.
Amelia exhaled slowly, forcing herself not to care about these people anymore. Ignoring the spotlight still tracking her every move, she walked straight for the door.
