“Kristen, you really are something else. Even the VIPs upstairs are falling head over heels for you.” Cameron grinned, acting like it was the most obvious thing in the world that the guests on the mezzanine were drawn in by Kristen’s charm.
The rest of the group immediately jumped in, piling on the compliments.
“A woman like Ms. Watts, with both brains and beauty? She’s one in a million.”
“We really owe Salmeron tonight. If he hadn’t brought us here, we’d never have met such an amazing woman.”
“Ms. Watts, I hope our company gets the chance to work with you sometime!”
At first, everyone thought Kristen was just eye candy—Cameron’s latest pretty date, nothing more. But when they realized she was the grand prize winner of the International Designers’ Competition, their attitudes changed fast. Instead of that shallow, dismissive look, their eyes now held real respect.
Guys like them had seen plenty of beautiful women. To them, looks were just another appetizer at the table—nice, but forgettable. Kristen, though, had real talent. And now, with even the VIPs upstairs paying attention to her, she was suddenly the hottest connection in the room.
Anyone with half a brain could tell—Cameron might’ve brought Kristen, but her real date tonight was Clive. That meant if you wanted to get on her good side, Clive was the one to impress.
“Salmeron, I can’t believe you have such an incredible friend. I’m honestly a little jealous,” someone joked.
But Clive wasn’t here to soak up compliments. His real goal tonight was Felix Baker—the son of General Nolan, and probably the most important guest in the room. Clive spotted Felix making his way over, drink in hand.
Earlier, when Clive arrived, Cameron had tried to introduce them. Felix barely looked up from his chair, just gave Clive a nod. But now, Felix came straight over and raised his glass.
Clive put on a polite smile and made sure his glass was just a little lower than Felix’s out of respect. “Mr. Baker, the pleasure’s all mine. I’ve heard so much about you. If you’re ever free, I’d love to stop by your office.”
General Nolan was in charge of the government’s biggest military contract next quarter. He barely left the base. But if Clive could get in with Felix, he might finally get his shot.
Felix took Clive’s business card and handed one back smoothly. “We’ll see,” he said, voice even.
Felix knew exactly what Clive was after. He didn’t care much for these social games. The only reason he was here tonight was to try and get himself a sponsor for the club’s mezzanine level. He’d been applying to join The Hollow Beat for two years, but you needed a member’s recommendation, and he was still missing one.
He hadn’t paid Kristen much attention at first—just glanced over when he heard she’d won the design award. That was it, until suddenly the big shots upstairs started noticing her.
