Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 149

“Amelia, I’m talking to you.” Clive’s voice was low and sharp. He let go with one hand, grabbing her chin so she had no choice but to meet his eyes.

She was so thin, her wrists pressed together so tightly that his hand could have easily circled both. She didn’t even have the strength to fight him off.

But suddenly, Clive felt a chill run through him. Panic bubbled up. He watched as every bit of warmth faded from Amelia’s eyes. Not even the tiniest spark of anger was left. Those eyes, the ones that used to look at him so full of love, soft and gentle, now just stared back, cold and empty, like a pond gone dry.

No.

This wasn’t how it was supposed to be.

Amelia should be anxious, rushing to explain herself like always, worried he’d gotten the wrong idea. Or maybe, if she was still mad about Kristen, she should be yelling, crying, lashing out—anything but this. Anything but this silence, this icy indifference.

“Amelia.” For the first time, real fear twisted in Clive’s chest. He let go, only then noticing the red mark he’d left on her chin.

“I’m sorry.” His voice was rough, and he looked totally lost. “I drank too much tonight. Everything happened so fast. I just… I lost it. I didn’t mean to.”

Amelia didn’t even seem to hear him. She just sat up, her expression blank, fixing her clothes where he’d messed them up.

When she raised her hand, a sharp pain shot up her wrist. Amelia frowned. He’d almost dislocated it.

“Amelia!” Clive panicked as she stood and started to walk away without a word. He reached out, desperate to stop her.

Amelia turned, her face set, and slapped him across the face.

The sound echoed in the room. It wasn’t hard—her wrist was already hurting, so there was barely any force behind it. It didn’t really hurt at all.

If Amelia’s face hadn’t been so cold, so shut off, the slap might have come off like one of those half-playful fights couples have.

But Clive felt something between them shatter.

“I’ll have the equipment ordered first thing tomorrow. I’ll get it rushed. Don’t forget to sign off.” Her voice was flat, all business.
