Adrian’s words put Amelia’s mind at ease.
“Got it. Thank you, Dr. Reed,” she said.
The moment she put her phone down, Timmy’s anxious voice cut through the quiet. “What’s wrong with Penny?”
Amelia ruffled his hair, keeping her tone calm. “It’s nothing big, honey. She just has a little stomach ache. It’s the weekend, so she’ll have a chance to rest. By Monday, she’ll be good as new.”
Timmy’s brow furrowed. “How did she get a stomach ache? Donna always follows the meal plan for both of us. Did Penny eat something from someone else at school?”
He propped his chin on his hand, sighing like a tiny grown-up. “Guess I’ll have to keep a closer eye on that little foodie at school from now on.”
Amelia’s heart softened as she watched him. There was a seriousness in Timmy’s eyes that didn’t fit a five-year-old.
She could see the guilt weighing on him. Maybe it was all those expectations the Salmeron family had piled onto his small shoulders—treating him like a little adult before he even learned to ride a bike. He was only five, yet he already thought everything was his responsibility.
She bent down to meet his gaze. “Sweetheart, you’re already doing amazing. Taking care of you and your sister—that’s what grown-ups are here for.”
Timmy stared at his shoes, his voice low and stubborn. “I don’t need anyone to protect me. Grandma and everyone always say I’m a genius. That means I have to take care of Penny. And one day, I’ll make Cloudcrest the best company ever.”
That’s what they’d drilled into him since he could remember.
A sharp ache twisted in Amelia’s chest.
What were they turning her son into? Just a tool for the family? He was still a child. How much had he swallowed to become this sensible?
She remembered her own childhood. She’d always been called a genius too, but Grandpa Tony had taught her to keep her gifts hidden—to protect herself from people who might use her. It wasn’t until college, when she finally had control over her life, that he encouraged her to let her talents shine.
Now she finally understood his caution—and his care.
Blinking back the sting of tears, Amelia pulled Timmy into a hug.
