Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 220

Kristen reached over and gently smoothed the crease between Clive’s brows, her touch soft with worry before she pulled her hand back.

“If taking the blame for this makes things a little easier for you—if it stops you from stressing so much…” She looked right at him, her eyes steady even as she forced a small, brave smile. “Then I’ll be the bad guy. It’s fine.”

Clive just stared at her, silent for a moment as he let out a heavy sigh. His throat felt dry. “Kristen, that’s not what I meant.”

She smiled, trying to look strong. “It’s okay, Clive. You don’t have to explain. You and Amelia have been married for years. Of course you’d believe her over me.”

Kristen paused, then added softly, almost as if she was defending Amelia instead of herself.

“I get where Amelia’s coming from, honestly. She didn’t have the easiest start in life, and just when she finally married you, she ended up in a coma the day she gave birth. Five whole years gone, and when she wakes up, her husband’s even more successful, even more out of reach… Anyone would feel insecure. If it were me—”

Clive’s eyes locked on her. “If it were you, what would you do?”

Kristen dropped her gaze and gave a quick, self-deprecating smile. “I’m not that lucky. Just being able to stay by your side at work is already more than enough for me.”

He looked at her—so gentle, never asking for more, never fighting for anything she didn’t already have.

A wave of guilt washed over Clive. He really shouldn’t have doubted her.

Sure, he and Amelia went way back, but Kristen had been in his life for years too.

And Kristen’s words hit home—after five years in a coma, how could Amelia not have changed? The woman who woke up wasn’t the same Amelia he’d married.

Clive thought back over all the ways Amelia had changed since she woke up, his expression growing colder by the second.

Amelia had always struggled with feeling insecure, but before, she tried to make up for it. She’d go out of her way to be good to him, to his family and friends—she just wanted to belong.

But now?

Clive checked his phone, his face giving nothing away.

It was already half past midnight, way past when he’d promised Amelia he’d be home.

The old Amelia would have been worried sick by now. She would have called, texted, maybe even tracked his location and shown up at the hospital herself.
