Clive’s eyes were cold, disappointment heavy in his stare.
…
It was nearly two in the morning when Amelia heard the soft click of the door. She woke up but didn’t open her eyes.
A slow, heavy tread pressed across the floor, moving closer. She didn’t need to look to know it was Clive—she could smell Kristen’s perfume on him, light and fresh like tea, but it still made her feel sick.
Clive stopped at the edge of the bed, watching Penny sleep. Then his eyes shifted to Amelia, his gaze growing even colder, with a flicker of annoyance. Her phone was right there beside her pillow. She was clearly ignoring him on purpose.
Clive glanced at Timmy, then turned and left the room.
Once she was sure he was gone, Amelia shifted and let herself drift back to sleep.
By seven, she was awake again. She carefully slid her arm out from under Penny, who’d been snuggled against her all night. Her arm was numb and tingling, but it was the kind of ache that made her smile.
How lucky to be needed by her daughter like this—especially after five years apart.
Gently, she checked Penny’s pulse with her free hand. Relief washed over her. Penny was still a little weak, but the Salmeron family had taken decent care of her. After a night’s rest, she was already bouncing back.
Amelia rubbed her sore arm, got up, and went to the small desk. She scribbled out a prescription, snapped a picture, and sent it to Dr. Adrian Reed, asking him to make up two days’ worth of medicine for Penny.
With that done, she slipped downstairs, careful not to make a sound.
Today was the day she’d meet Mr. Ryan Packman at West Medicine. It was also the day she’d finally leave Cloudcrest and start her own career. She still needed to swing by her apartment to pick up the proposal she’d worked on for months.
“Mrs. Salmeron, you’re up already?” Donna stepped out of her room, surprised to see Amelia on her way down. “You could’ve slept a little longer. I was about to make breakfast.”
“It’s alright, Donna. I have an important client to meet this morning. I’ll need you to look after Penny, if that’s okay. Dr. Reed will drop off her medicine later.”
