Amelia opened the video Ms. Arnold had sent.
It was taken yesterday afternoon, right after school, in a quiet corner near the school gates.
On screen, Penny glanced around to make sure no one was watching, then snatched some food from another little girl’s lunchbox, stuffed it in her mouth, and took off running.
The camera lingered on the girl left behind. She quietly picked up her lunchbox and walked away in the opposite direction.
Amelia rewound the video, frowning as she stared at the girl. There was something familiar about her… and then it hit her. Wasn’t this the same girl she’d seen by the roadside after dropping Penny off at school? She’d had a bad feeling then and even gave the little girl her phone number, just in case.
“Penny’s always been so well-behaved in class. I didn’t expect her to take another child’s food,” Ms. Arnold said sternly. “This sort of thing could be considered bullying.”
Amelia was speechless. Sure, Penny loved her snacks, but stealing from another kid? That didn’t sound like her at all. But the video was right there.
“I’ll have a talk with Penny,” Amelia said quietly.
Ms. Arnold nodded, then added, “Penny seems outgoing and confident, but she’s very sensitive. You and your husband should pay close attention to her emotional health.”
“I understand, Ms. Arnold. Thank you for telling me.”
“All right then. Goodbye.”
Ms. Arnold put down her phone with a sigh, frowning. That family changed wives more often than most people changed clothes. No matter how rich they were, it must be tough for the kids growing up in a place like that.
…
After the call, Amelia remembered Clive was at the hospital with Kristen and probably wouldn't be home anytime soon, so she headed straight back to the villa.
She bumped into Adrian just as he was about to leave after delivering some medicine.
“Mrs. Salmeron,” Adrian greeted her, looking genuinely glad to see her.
Amelia nodded. “Dr. Reed, thank you for coming over again.”
“It’s no trouble, really. It’s my job.” Adrian hesitated, then said, “Actually, Mrs. Salmeron, I have a favor to ask.”
Amelia looked at him, a little surprised.
“My mentor is Jeremy, the vice president of the International Medical Association.”
A flicker of recognition crossed Amelia’s face as she remembered the mischievous old man who used to visit her family when she was little.
Adrian went on, “There’s a big conference coming up, a kind of East-West medicine exchange. We’re having a hard time finding the right young doctors to represent us. If you’re available, would you consider attending?”
“Sure,” Amelia agreed right away, without even thinking about it.
Her grandfather had devoted his whole life to advancing the field, and she was happy to help, especially for someone like Jeremy, who she’d known since childhood.
Adrian seemed surprised by how quickly she accepted, his face lighting up.
“But, Mrs. Salmeron, just so you know, our association isn’t exactly rolling in money. It’s a voluntary thing—there’s no appearance fee,” he said honestly.
Amelia smiled. “That’s fine. I don’t need an appearance fee. But can I make one request?”
