Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 237

Amelia lowered her eyes.

It didn’t really mean anything. Clive was just holding on to the little habits she’d left behind over the years, the ones that had quietly become a part of his life.

“Penny, Mommy wants to ask you something.” Amelia set down the empty bowl from Penny’s medicine and looked at her daughter seriously. “Why did you take another kid’s snack after school yesterday?”

Penny immediately shot up, all flustered. “I didn’t take Yaya’s snack! I promise I didn’t!”

So the other little girl was named Yaya…

Amelia wasn’t sure which character made up that name, but she just echoed Penny.

“Then why did you eat her food? Penny, you know your tummy can’t handle random things. You’re not supposed to eat stuff like that, remember?”

Penny clearly didn’t want to explain. She turned away and buried her face in her blanket, her voice muffled and sulky. “It’s a secret between me and Yaya… I can’t tell you. Anyway, I won’t eat anything bad for my stomach anymore.”

As long as Penny wasn’t bullying her classmates, Amelia let out a sigh of relief.

Moments alone with her daughter had become so rare, and now that Penny wasn’t so distant, Amelia wanted to say something more. But just then, Penny’s little phone started ringing.

She immediately scrambled over to answer.

“Daddy!”

It was Clive calling.

He said something, and Penny instantly shot Amelia a suspicious look, then turned her back, clutching her phone and whispering in a tiny voice.

Amelia got the hint. She picked up the empty bowl and headed for the door, but as she reached it, Penny’s voice suddenly spiked with panic.

“Momma Kristen’s hurt? How is that possible? She called this morning and promised she’d take me shopping for pretty clothes when I got better…”

Penny’s words were shaky, her voice nearly breaking into tears.

Amelia stiffened for a moment, then quietly closed the door behind her and went downstairs.

Once the door clicked shut, Penny finally turned around.

Clive’s voice was still coming through the phone, tired and rough, trying his best to comfort her.

“Aunt Kristen’s okay. She’ll be out soon, don’t worry.”

“Daddy, can I go see Momma Kristen?”

“Not yet, sweetheart. When she’s a little better, I’ll take you.”

With so many germs in a hospital, and Penny’s body being so fragile, there was no way Clive would risk bringing her there.

Clive was standing outside the hospital, tucked away in a quiet corner. He leaned against the wall, phone pressed to his ear, lighting a cigarette with his free hand. The flame made the dried blood on his palm look even more raw and red.

His eyes, usually so gentle, were dark and clouded now. The last time he’d seen so much blood was back in his junior year of college.

He’d fainted suddenly and spent a whole week unconscious.
