Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 24

She could remember it so clearly—Clive sitting at her bedside, gripping her hand like he’d never let go, eyes red and tired, trying so hard to look strong for her.

He’d said, “Amelia, even if I lose my job, it doesn’t matter. I can’t let you keep working yourself into the ground for my sake.”

Back then, she’d been so moved, so sure she’d married the best man in the world.

But thinking about it now, if Clive had really cared about her at all, he never would’ve let her leave the hospital when she was so weak she could barely stand. If he’d just said no, she wouldn’t have been discharged at all.

If someone loves you, don’t listen to their words—watch what they actually do.

And what did Clive do?

The second she said she wanted to go home, he immediately signed the paperwork, and by the next morning, she was back at the research institute.

He knew her too well. He knew exactly how much she loved him. The tiniest frown from him, and she’d want to give him everything she had.

He used her feelings, squeezed her dry, and made sure he kept his place at the top.

A wave of cold swept through Amelia, leaving her numb inside.

Clive, how could you be so cruel?

Amelia forced a bright smile and looked up at him. “You’re right. I was rushing things. I should listen to you and take it easy.”

Her obedient answer obviously pleased Clive. He reached out and patted her head, looking satisfied.

“Go rest for a bit. I’ll come up soon.”

“Okay.”

She gripped her cane and headed upstairs. Once she was out of Clive’s sight, the smile vanished from her face, and she picked up her pace, moving straight toward the kids’ room.

Penny pouted, clearly upset. “She pulled out all of Mommy Kristen’s favorite tulips! I don’t like that woman at all. I don’t want her to be our mom! I want Mommy Kristen!”

Seeing Timmy’s stern face, Penny slipped off her princess bed and wrapped herself around his arm, trying to win him over.

“Come on, Timmy, who do you like better—her or Mommy Kristen? Tell me! And no lying! Teacher says good kids don’t lie.”

Outside the door, Amelia’s heart was in her throat.

Timmy frowned, thinking hard. He knew Amelia was his real mom, but for the past five years, Kristen had been the one there for them—going to every school event, every parent-teacher meeting, always with their dad.

He’d even called her Mommy Kristen, just like Penny.

Timmy hesitated for a long time, then finally mumbled, “Aunt Kristen is… closer to us…”
