Amelia could read Penny like a book. Even behind her sunglasses, her eyes lost a bit of their shine. As usual, Clive just let Penny have her way.
“Alright, your brother will walk you in. I’ll stay in the car and watch you head inside,” he said.
“Thanks, Dad.” Penny’s grin was pure sunshine.
Still, Amelia couldn’t help herself. “Timmy, Penny, be careful, okay? Watch out and stay safe.”
Penny slammed the car door shut and strode off without a backward glance.
Timmy hesitated, walking a few steps before glancing back at the car. Amelia was still waving from the window, her hand stretched out, saying goodbye as if she didn’t want to let go.
He paused, feeling a little bad. Even though he knew she couldn’t see him, Timmy raised his hand and waved back.
Amelia felt a flicker of relief in her heart.
At least Timmy didn’t completely shut her out.
Clive kept one hand on the wheel, glancing at Amelia. “Amelia, I’ve got a client coming in soon. I need to handle this myself. I’ll drop you at the corner and have the driver take you home.”
“No need, Clive. I want to go to the office with you,” Amelia replied, her voice steady.
Clive blinked, clearly not expecting that. “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure. I might not be able to see, but I can still catch up with the team and get up to speed on the projects. It’ll help me settle back in.”
Clive tapped his finger on the steering wheel, thinking it over. After a moment, he nodded. “Okay.”
Amelia followed Clive back to Cloudcrest.
Five years had passed, but the place hadn’t changed at all.
Amelia smiled gently. “Don’t worry about me. Go do your thing.”
Before he left, Clive leaned in and kissed her cheek, putting on his perfect husband act for everyone to see.
Amelia wanted to roll her eyes at his performance, but she forced a smile and played along.
Neither of them noticed Kristen watching from a shadowy corner upstairs, her grip tightening on a folder as she took in every detail.
Once Clive was gone, Aiden turned to Amelia. “Mrs. Salmeron, where would you like to go first?”
Amelia didn’t hesitate. “Take me to the R&D department.”
That was her territory—pharmaceutical research was what she did best.
