Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 262

Amelia stared at the man in front of her, caught off guard for a second. It took her a moment to realize who he was.

“Will?”

“It’s me.” Will’s shoulders finally relaxed and a smile broke across his face. Relief sparkled in his voice. “For a second there, I thought you’d forgotten me.”

“As if I could ever forget,” Amelia said, smiling back. She was genuinely happy to see someone from her past.

She stood, reaching out her hand. “It’s been ages.”

Technically, she and Will had only really spent two months together—the summer before her junior year—working non-stop on Firewall Z. Back then, things with Clive weren’t official. Clive was traveling in Europe, and with the time difference, sometimes it took him a day or two to reply to her messages.

Most days that summer, Amelia was holed up in the computer lab with Will. When they got busy, she barely remembered to check her phone, let alone text Clive. She used to wish days had forty-eight hours.

In her mind, Will from college was always the quiet, brilliant guy with glasses. He barely showed up on campus. Rumor was, he’d made a deal with the school: as long as he paid his tuition and housing, he only had to show up for exams.

He kept every grade right at the passing line. Never failed, never bothered to score higher.

One day, Will turned up in front of her wearing a baseball cap, a faded gray t-shirt, jeans washed almost white, and a messenger bag slung over his shoulder. He smelled like laundry detergent—clean and fresh, but also a little cheap.

He’d said, “You’re Amelia, right? I’ve got a project. Want to make some money together?”

The more time Amelia spent with Will, the more she realized how much he needed the money.

When he wasn’t on campus, he was out hustling, picking up any gig he could find. For a guy not even twenty, his eyes always seemed older, carrying way more weight than they should.

Amelia never asked about his past or where his money went. Will never asked about her, either—never commented on how she always glanced at her phone, waiting for someone’s message. He never questioned why she could work until midnight without a single call from home, never wondered why she never mentioned going back.

During those two months, Will found a kindred spirit in Amelia.

But back then, he didn’t have the right to say anything more. Just getting through each day was hard enough.

Now, though, everything was different.

Will looked at Amelia’s hand and wrapped his much larger one around it. “Yeah, it really has been a while, Amelia.”

After all these years, he was finally standing in front of her again.

Just then, a spotlight swept across the dance floor. Confetti cannons fired on every screen, showering the room with gold streamers that glittered under the lights, turning the place into a real-life fantasy.

The host’s voice rang out, full of energy. “The masquerade ball starts now!”

Amelia tried to pull her hand away, but Will held on tight.

“Ms. Sadinton, may I have this dance?” He bent slightly, inviting her with an easy, gentlemanly charm.
