While Emmery was on the phone arranging a car, he had to practically jog to keep up with Dr. Wade. As soon as Baybridge University was mentioned, something clicked in his mind.
“Professor, that legendary genius from back in the day—Amelia—wasn’t she Dr. Borgen’s protégé?”
Emmery hadn’t even gone to Baybridge, but he’d heard Amelia’s name everywhere.
Dr. Wade nodded, not slowing down. “Yeah. Back then, Jared was ridiculously proud of her. He’d take her everywhere, and when she wasn’t around, he’d brag about her nonstop. He was basically grooming her to take over his work.” Wade and Emmery had known each other for years, so he knew just how proud Dr. Borgen could be.
Which only showed how much he really liked Amelia.
“So what happened to her? Why’d she just vanish?” Emmery asked, even more confused.
With Amelia’s talent and Dr. Borgen’s support, she should be world-famous by now.
Dr. Wade finally stopped and looked over at him. Instead of answering, he warned, “When we see Jared, if you don’t want him chasing you out with a cane, don’t mention Amelia. Seriously.”
Emmery blinked. “What?”
…
West Medicine.
Amelia didn’t stop moving the entire morning, barely finding time for a sip of water.
She’d been brought in as project lead for this partnership.
West Medicine had its own top-notch research center, with fancy equipment and a full team of pros.
The research department had always had a lot of freedom, and even after Ryan took over as boss, he didn’t really shake things up. The only people let go were the old boss’s close buddies in management.
Everything else stayed the same.
Belle ran the research center. She was just over thirty, with a sharp bob and an even sharper attitude.
She had a Stanford PhD and had published a bunch of SCI papers while still in college—the classic academic superstar.
That morning, Belle personally showed Amelia around, then led her to her new office.
“My office is down at the end of the hall. If you need anything, Ms. Sadinton, just let me know.” Belle’s voice was polite, but distant.
“Thank you, Belle. I appreciate it,” Amelia replied, matching her politeness.
Then she got to work.
She wasn’t here for friends—she was here for the job. As long as everyone worked together, she didn’t care about anything else.
She spent the morning tightening up her research plan, breaking down every step, timeline, and staffing need.
With her notes ready, she went to find Belle for a quick review so she could get started.
