After what happened with West Medicine, Clive was way more careful this time.

He looked over at Kristen. “Kristen, can you try reaching Dr. Wade now?”

“I can, but I’m not sure if he’s free right now.”

Kristen pulled out her phone as she spoke. She’d already saved the number Will had sent her, and she’d even texted Dr. Wade before to introduce herself. His reply was super brief: Just a simple “Okay.”

Unbothered, Kristen called him.

Clive said, “Put it on speaker.”

Cameron shot Clive a quick look, a tiny frown creasing his brow.

Maybe he was reading too much into things, but Cameron couldn’t help feeling that Clive was starting to trust Kristen less and less these days.

Kristen did as Clive asked, set her phone on the table, and switched to speaker.

They waited for about half a minute before someone picked up.

“Hello, Dr. Wade? This is Kristen—we’ve spoken before,” Kristen quickly said, making sure not to miss a beat.

But a young man’s voice came through instead. “Ms. Watts, Dr. Wade is in a meeting with some important guests right now. He can’t take calls. I’m his student.”

“Oh, sorry for bothering you. Tomorrow morning at ten, I’ll be visiting the research base with Mr. Salmeron. We’ll be there on time.”

The student answered politely, “Alright. We’ll be expecting you both.”

When the call ended, Kristen looked over at Clive, her voice soft. “Clive, let’s go see Dr. Wade together tomorrow morning. He’s already seen my proposal and everything’s fine.”

Clive finally let himself relax. “Thanks for all your help, Kristen.”

She smiled and looked down for a second. “I’m part of the company too. Besides—helping you makes me happy.”

Seeing how understanding she was, Clive felt a pang of guilt for doubting her even for a second. She never asked for anything—she just wanted to help.

“Kristen…”

Before he could say more, Kristen stood up. “Mr. Salmeron, I’ll get back to work now.”

Cameron stood up too. “I’ve got some things to do as well. Let’s head out together.”

They left the office and walked to the elevator together. As they waited, Cameron glanced at Kristen. She barely had any makeup on, her face pale and her eyes still red from crying. She looked so fragile, it made his chest tighten.

Ever since Amelia had woken up, Kristen had just seemed more and more worn out.

Cameron’s brow furrowed. His dislike for Amelia was getting harder to hide.

“Kristen…”

“What’s up, Cameron?”

Looking at her gentle, clear eyes, Cameron suddenly felt breathless.
