Clive was completely blindsided by Amelia’s swift, no-nonsense slap. His right cheek burned, the pain sharp and real—there was no mistaking it. She’d meant every bit of that hit.
Shock, anger, and a deep, stinging humiliation crowded his chest. Getting slapped by a woman, and in front of everyone? That was a sting to his pride he couldn’t ignore.
“Amelia! Are you out of your mind?” Clive snapped, his voice low and tight with rage.
He almost never lost his cool like this in public but now the veins in his neck stood out, his fists clenched like he might lose it at any second.
Amelia didn’t even flinch. She stood there, cool and calm, staring back at him with eyes that were pure ice. Gone was any trace of the gentle, obedient girl she used to be. Now, all he could see in her gaze was disgust and a wary kind of strength.
For a moment, Clive actually wondered if she’d fight him for real if he so much as took a step forward. The thought sent a cold chill through him—and stirred something else he couldn’t quite name. Before he could react, Kristen stumbled over, face puffy and red from where Amelia had slapped her, sobbing as she threw herself at Clive.
“Clive, help me, please!”
He moved without thinking, pulling Kristen behind him protectively. His voice was flat and cold when he glared at Amelia. “Don’t push it.”
Push it? Amelia gave a bitter laugh. Did he really think this was already too much? After everything Kristen and her mother had done to the Sadinton family, a couple of slaps was barely a scratch.
“Amelia, I won’t call the police,” Kristen whimpered, playing the helpless victim. “Just… just let it out, okay? Please, don’t be mad at Clive anymore…”
Amelia’s lips twisted in a cold smile. “You think a few slaps are enough to make things right?” She rubbed her wrist, sore from the impact, and took a step toward Kristen. Her eyes were icy and sharp, a little dangerous.
There was real steel in her now—enough to make anyone nervous.
Looking at Kristen, Amelia suddenly saw flashes of Bianca in her face. The hate that surged up nearly made her dizzy. It was the kind of hate that burrowed into your bones and never let go.
Kristen’s voice trembled. “What do you want from me, Amelia? Do you want me to get down and beg?”
