Dr. Wade was nothing if not direct, and Amelia wasn’t the type to play games either.
She came right out with it. “Dr. Borgen, I have a bit of a bold favor to ask. I’m in desperate need of some lab supplies. Would it be possible for me to borrow some from your lab?”
Diego didn’t hesitate. “Of course. Just let me know what you need and how much. I’ll have someone drop everything off for you tomorrow.”
As someone running a major national project, he never had to worry about running out of supplies.
Amelia quickly said, “That’s really not necessary. I can swing by and pick them up myself.”
“That works too.” Diego was already thinking ahead. “Since you’ll be coming over anyway, why don’t you have lunch with me?”
Dr. Borgen already didn’t want this student anymore, so Diego figured it wasn’t really stealing if he tried to recruit her now.
“Thank you, Dr. Wade.”
With that settled, Amelia finally felt a little more at ease.
She was about to text Belle the good news when her phone rang. It was the finance department.
“Ms. Sadinton, your bank card has been reported lost and frozen. We tried to send your three hundred thousand advance, but it bounced back.”
“Frozen? How is that possible, I—” Amelia pulled her card out of her purse and stopped cold. She realized it instantly—Clive.
They weren’t officially divorced yet. As her husband, he could still report her card lost, and since Clive was one of the bank’s VIPs, if he wanted her account frozen, nobody would dare question it.
Amelia closed her eyes, took a shaky breath, and gripped the card so hard her hand trembled.
Blacklisted, card frozen... Fifteen years together, and to Clive, it meant nothing.
He was really trying to destroy her.
Forcing herself to stay calm, she told the accountant, “Sorry, there’s an issue on my end. I’ll get in touch with the bank right away.”
“Alright, thank you.”
As soon as she hung up, Amelia called the bank to try to unfreeze the card, but compared to Clive, she was a nobody. The bank kept giving her the runaround, talking about complicated procedures, but the truth was, they just didn’t want to upset Clive over her.
With no other options, Amelia dragged Clive out of her blocked contacts, swallowed her anger, and called him.
At that moment, Clive was in the middle of a high-level meeting. His phone vibrated on the table.
He was about to reject the call, but when he saw “Mrs. Salmeron” on the screen, he immediately straightened up. He picked up the phone and gestured for the manager to pause.
“Let’s take a ten-minute break. I need to answer this.”
He left the room, closed the door behind him, and answered.
He let out a cold, mocking laugh. “What’s wrong? Realized you messed up?”
Freezing her account had definitely worked.
If Amelia didn’t get a taste of consequences, she’d keep thinking she could do whatever she wanted.
