Ms. Arnold jumped in, trying to calm everyone down. “Come on, Jacob’s mom, Roberto’s mom, let’s just talk this out, okay?”
Jacob’s mom shot back, clearly losing patience. “What’s left to talk about? Didn’t the cameras catch everything? That girl ran up and took down both my Jacob and Roberto. She’s completely out of control!”
Amelia turned to Ms. Arnold, hoping for some clarity.
Ms. Arnold quickly pulled up the security footage and handed it to Amelia.
On the screen, Jacob and Roberto were hanging around the back door, looking like they were waiting for someone. Out of nowhere, Penny burst into view and kicked Jacob’s backpack hard. Roberto tried to grab her, but Penny dodged and landed two quick punches before either boy could react.
Will had followed Amelia in, but with the tension in the air and two angry moms in the room, he felt totally out of place and kept quiet. Still, he leaned in to watch the footage with the others. Penny’s moves weren’t perfect, but it was obvious she’d been taught something. She might look tiny, but her little fists looked strong, and she wasn’t afraid to use them.
She was actually holding her own against both boys.
Amelia put it all together right away. This had Timmy written all over it—he’d probably shown Penny a few tricks. With his family’s background, self-defense was just part of growing up.
Once the video finished, Amelia knelt down so she could look Penny in the eye.
Her voice was gentle but serious. “Penny, why did you hit those boys?”
Penny’s face turned red and she shouted, “They deserved it! They started it. They were being mean first!”
Roberto’s mom cut in, her voice high and sharp. “Don’t you dare try to blame my son! He would never do something like that!”
Amelia held Penny’s shoulders gently. “Penny, tell me, sweetheart. Who were they picking on?”
