Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 308

Amelia never expected Ryan to care this much about the jacket, let alone show up himself, late at night, just to get it back.

Since he’d come all the way here, she really couldn’t say no.

“Okay, give me a second.”

She took his jacket out, folded it neatly into a paper bag, threw on a long cardigan over her nightdress, and headed out the door.

As soon as she stepped outside the building, she spotted Ryan right away. He was leaning against his car, long legs crossed, a black baseball cap pulled low over his face as he scrolled through his phone. The streetlight caught just the lower half of his face, the rest hidden in shadow. Half light, half dark—just like Ryan. Always impossible to figure out.

Amelia walked toward him, and for one dizzy second, she thought of that boy from seven years ago, the one who’d stopped her at the airport.

Amelia, is it worth it?

She tightened her grip on the paper bag, heart racing for reasons she couldn’t name, and called out, “Ryan.”

He paused, fingers hovering over his phone, but didn’t look up right away.

The cold light from his screen reflected in his eyes, lighting up a message: Confirmed. The Henson family is the one blacklisting Ms. Sadinton.

Ryan’s lips pressed together. Him again.

He fired off a quick reply and stashed his phone just before Amelia reached him.

He looked up, eyes narrowing slightly as she walked toward him under the soft glow of the streetlight, cardigan billowing gently over her nightdress. For a second, she looked almost like a butterfly—delicate, poised, fluttering just out of reach.

“Thanks for your jacket, Mr. Packman. I washed it for you,” Amelia said, polite and distant.

There it was again. Mr. Packman.

Ryan reached out to take the bag, about to say something. “So—”

She cut him off before he could get a word out.

“I’ll head back now. Drive safe, Mr. Packman,” she said, already turning away.

Ryan let out a silent sigh. What, was he some kind of monster?

He watched her walk away without a second glance, a chill flickering in his dark eyes.

Then, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted someone else—Will, coming out of the building.

Ryan took a quick breath, strode over, and grabbed Amelia’s arm, spinning her around.

She was completely caught off guard. She looked up at him, eyes wide, as Ryan stepped into her space, backing her up until her shoulder nearly touched his car.
