The next morning

Clive slipped into a sharp suit, making sure every detail was just right as he knotted his tie and fastened his expensive watch. He checked the time, then grabbed his keys, ready to pick up Kristen and head to the Green Wall Research Center to sign the contract with Dr. Wade. The whole company was already buzzing about the new government partnership he’d lined up. Losing the West Medicine deal had been a blow, but this project was even bigger. At next week’s shareholders’ meeting, he was sure he’d be the star of the show.

With his mood lifted, Clive headed downstairs and opened the front door—only to find Kristen already waiting outside.

“Kristen?” he said, surprised. “I thought I was picking you up.”

She smiled, looking effortless in a blue dress that fit her perfectly, her hair smooth and styled. In one hand she held a box of pastries, in the other a thermos.

“I woke up early and couldn’t fall back asleep,” she said, handing him the thermos with a gentle smile. “So I made some of Penny’s favorite treats for the kids. And this is for you.” She met his eyes, her expression warm. “Last time I brought you breakfast, Donna knocked it over. You have to try it today.”

Just then, the kids came clattering down the stairs.

Penny, as always, made a beeline for Kristen, her little legs moving fast. “Aunt Kristen!”
