She’d always been the best at dishing out compliments, making anyone feel like they were walking on sunshine. But this time, when Penny called her “Aunt Kristen,” Kristen’s smile wobbled just a little.
Timmy was a different story. That kid always did his own thing, a little too grown-up for his age, never really getting close to anyone. But with Penny, Kristen had poured her heart into it. She’d spent so much time trying to convince Penny that she was the most important person in her life, the one she could rely on no matter what.
She wanted Penny to see her as a mom.
Clive spooned up some of the oatmeal Kristen made and looked at her. “You went all out. Breakfast is great.”
Kristen reached over and gently brushed Penny’s cheek, smiling brightly. “I make this stuff all the time, don’t I?”
Clive didn’t say anything for a second.
It was true. Over the years, Kristen had done so much for the kids—and for him too. She’d also thrown herself into work, even bringing him this shot at working with the government on the Green Wall project.
Clive grabbed a napkin and wiped his mouth. He realized he probably owed Kristen a lot more than he’d ever admitted.
His eyes landed on the shelf, where the fancy handbag he’d originally bought for Amelia was still sitting. But if Amelia really wanted the divorce, what was the point of giving her such an expensive bag? She probably didn’t even know the brand, always carrying those cheap canvas totes and claiming they were “practical” for work.
That thought made Clive scowl.
Without saying anything, he got up, grabbed the unopened bag, and handed it to Kristen.
“Kristen, this is for you. You worked so hard to get us into the Green Wall project—I wanted to thank you.”
Kristen’s eyes sparkled as she opened the box. When she saw what was inside, her grin got even bigger.
