Amelia’s voice rang out clear as day through the video call, and everyone heard it—even Penny.
Is Mom here too?
Penny’s arms, frozen mid-reach, dropped awkwardly to her sides. Her big eyes stayed glued to the screen, searching for Amelia, but all she saw was her great-grandma. No sign of Mom anywhere.
But she’d heard her. Mom was there, right by Great-Grandma. That meant Mom had probably heard her, too—heard her call out, “Momma Kristen.”
Something twisted in Penny’s chest, leaving her anxious and a little lost. She wanted to step closer, say something, anything to her mom. Even just a couple of words—she needed them.
But before she could move, Kristen swooped in from behind, pulling Penny into a tight hug.
“Sweetheart, don’t worry, don’t cry. Momma Kristen’s just fine,” Kristen said, her voice extra loud, making sure Amelia would hear every word through the screen.
Kristen held Penny even tighter, feeling a triumphant rush. No matter what, this little girl would always know her as Momma Kristen. Five years—she’d spent five whole years pouring everything into Penny.
Penny might be Amelia’s daughter, but in Kristen’s arms, she was the sharpest, most effective weapon against Amelia. The perfect tool for revenge.
Out in the Salmeron family garden, Mrs. Salmeron hurried to end the video call, her hands a little shaky. She looked at Amelia, guilt and worry written all over her face—and a hint of something like fear.
“Amelia…” Mrs. Salmeron reached out with her wrinkled hand, taking Amelia’s in hers. Tears shimmered in her eyes. “It’s us, the Salmerons. We let you down. I’m so sorry.”
Amelia stayed silent. There was nothing left to say. The Salmeron family truly had wronged her.
Mrs. Salmeron’s voice shook, barely more than a whisper. “You and Clive… there’s really no chance of going back, is there?”
