Kristen looked at Clive, her eyes brimming with tears. “Salmeron never did anything wrong. Cameron is completely innocent too. If you want to blame someone, just blame me. This is all on me… If it’ll make you feel better, I’ll get down on my knees and apologize. Is that what you want?”
She started to kneel right there.
Cameron’s heart twisted. He moved as if to stop her, but Clive was faster. He rushed forward and blocked Kristen, shielding her with his whole body.
Cameron’s hand hung awkwardly in midair for a second before he balled it into a fist and slowly lowered it.
Clive kept Kristen securely behind him, every part of his stance protective.
He frowned, locking eyes with Mrs. Salmeron on the screen. “Grandma, Kristen protected me last night and got splashed with acid. She’s weak and needs to rest. If you have something to say, wait till I get home and we’ll talk then, okay?”
“Splashed with acid?” Mrs. Salmeron sneered, her gaze sweeping over Kristen’s pale face. “She looks just fine to me. Not a scratch on her.”
Clive took a slow breath, trying to keep it together. “Would you only be satisfied if her face was scarred? Grandma, you’re letting Amelia twist your mind.”
Mrs. Salmeron opened her mouth to lash out, but Amelia and Tara walked in just then.
She didn’t bother arguing anymore. Her voice turned cold. “Donna, bring her back to me. Now.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Donna answered right away. “If Ms. Watts doesn’t cooperate, we’ll tie her up and take her.”
Clive’s voice was sharp, barely contained. “I dare anyone to touch her.”
Amelia walked in just in time to hear Clive’s outburst. She didn’t have to look to know exactly who he was protecting. Her face was calm, her eyes giving nothing away.
Mrs. Salmeron caught Amelia’s blank expression and sighed to herself.
It really looked like Amelia didn’t care anymore.
