Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 4

Downstairs.

Amelia took a quick, calm glance around. Kristen and the kids were gone. They must’ve left early.-

Clive walked her over to the passenger side and opened the door. The very first thing Amelia noticed was a Chanel lipstick lying on the seat.

Clive caught her eye, scooped up the lipstick, and quietly slipped it into his pocket without saying a word. Then, acting like nothing happened, he gently helped her into the seat.

“Clive,” Amelia asked quietly, “while I was in a coma these past five years, did any other woman ever sit here?”

“Of course not,” Clive replied instantly. He hesitated, then tried to joke it off. “Everyone in North Olympic knows my wife’s famous for being tough. You’re the woman who stormed a kidnapper’s hideout with a gun.”

Tough, huh?

Yeah, that was her. Back when they’d just gotten married, Clive had been kidnapped. The police weren’t making much progress, and Amelia had been losing her mind with worry. She pulled every string she had to track him down, and finally, she found where he was being held.

She went there herself, carrying a suitcase of cash in one hand and a loaded gun in the other, She’s willing to risk everything to get him back.

Clive had promised her then: he’d never betray her.

A red light appeared ahead, and the car rolled to a gentle stop behind the crosswalk.

Clive glanced over suddenly. “Amelia, what was it like to be in a coma?”

Behind her sunglasses, Amelia looked at him, her face unreadable as he reached over and took her hand.

“It felt like being trapped in a never-ending dream. Everything was just black—no sound, no light… just this endless fear.”

“Mr. Packman, everything alright?” Francisco, his assistant in the passenger seat, turned around, clearly surprised—he’d never seen the boss like this.

“It’s nothing…”

The Bentley faded into the distance, shrinking to a speck.

Ryan Packman slowly pulled his gaze back. Not far away, the Cloudcrest Tower sign glowed against the night sky.

He narrowed his eyes, lost in thought. A mocking, bitter smile tugged at his lips.

“Amelia,” he murmured, her name coming out rough, the sound soft but packed with emotion. Under his breath, he added, “Was it worth it?”
