Amelia let out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding.
“Sorry, Mr. Packman, I think I was out of line. It’s just… you’re always so kind to me. I needed to know where we stand, that’s all…”
A shadow of hurt flickered in Ryan’s eyes, gone before she could be sure she’d seen it.
He let go of her hand, slow and careful, as if forcing himself to do it. The second his grip loosened, Amelia stepped back, putting distance between them.
She looked like a scared rabbit, scrambling away as soon as she sensed the coast was clear.
She doesn’t like me.
At least that much was obvious right now.
Ryan’s lips twisted in a crooked, self-mocking smile.
He shoved his hands into his pockets and said, a little too flat, “Will’s just my business partner. You work for me. Don’t get too close to him.”
Something about the way he said it sounded strange. Amelia corrected him, “I work for you, Mr. Packman. That’s it.”
Ryan shot her a chilly look, eyes sharp and cold.
Realizing she might have crossed a line, Amelia quickly tried to fix it. “Sorry, Mr. Packman. I didn’t mean anything by it. Will and I are just friends.”
Ryan seemed barely satisfied with her answer.
His phone buzzed. He glanced down: a text from Nathan.
Bro, we caught the guys who went after Amelia.
He slipped his phone back into his pocket, not giving anything away.
“I’ve got something to take care of. You owe me a late-night snack, by the way. Make it up to me next time.”
“Okay. Goodbye, Mr. Packman.” She waved at him, bright smile and all.
Ryan just stared for a second.
Was she really that happy to see him go?
The thought annoyed him more than he wanted to admit.
The longer he thought about it, the more irritated he got.
Outside, Francisco was already waiting by the car.
