Did she want to say she regretted it?
“Dad, why are you smiling?” Timmy asked, watching Clive nervously, afraid he’d crush the autumn leaf in his hand. That leaf was special—his mom had picked it out just for him. It was their little secret.
Timmy stretched up on his tiptoes, trying to grab the leaf back from Clive.
But Clive was faster. He turned and headed upstairs, the leaf held out of reach. “Tell your mother that after everything she’s done, these tricks won’t work on me anymore.”
Timmy stared after him, totally lost.
Wasn’t he supposed to be a genius? How come he had no idea what was going on?
What tricks was Mom playing? And why didn’t anyone tell him?
Timmy scratched his head, confused. The leaf was gone for now—nothing he could do but hope Mom would give him another next time.
He lugged two heavy bags of clothes back to his room, grumbling under his breath.
Penny was almost asleep when she heard the door open. She sat up, rubbing her sleepy eyes. “Timmy? You’re back…”
She’d had dinner with Dad and Momma Kristen tonight. After dinner, Dad brought her home, and Momma Kristen went back to her own place.
“Mom got you this,” Timmy said, pulling out the cute dress Amelia picked for Penny. “Do you like it? And she sent you cheese puffs, but it’s late, so you can only have one.”
Penny stared at the dress and the snack, looking kind of dazed.
She remembered what Amelia had told her before: Penny, you can only have one mom. If you pick Kristen, I won’t be your mom anymore.
She thought her mom didn’t want her anymore.
“Hey, what’s wrong, Penny?” Timmy looked over and saw her eyes shining with tears, and he panicked. Climbing onto her bed, he quickly wiped her cheeks. “Don’t cry, don’t cry. Are you hungry?”
He stuffed the cheese puff into her mouth before she could answer.
Penny sniffled, chewing and trying to talk, but her words were all muffled.
“It’s okay, really. Don’t cry,” Timmy said, grabbing her water bottle. When she finished eating, he handed her the straw.
Penny took a sip, then finally asked, voice trembling, “Timmy, can I have two moms?”
Timmy didn’t know what to say.
He only wanted one mom. He’d never felt close to Kristen, and now that his real mom was back, Kristen’s smiles just seemed fake. He hadn’t noticed it before, but now he couldn’t unsee it.
But Penny really liked Kristen.
