“Of course, sweetheart.”
It was the first time Penny had ever reached out to her, and there was no way Amelia could say no.
“I want to use Aunt Caroline’s bathroom. It always smells so nice in there,” Penny announced, eyes wide with hope.
Amelia hesitated. “How about we ask your aunt first, okay?”
Caroline and Penny were obviously close, so Penny going in and out wouldn’t be an issue. But if Amelia just walked in without asking, Caroline would definitely make a big deal out of it.
The problem was, Caroline wasn’t even in the living room—no one knew where she’d gone.
“Aunt Caroline isn’t here... Oh no, Mommy, I can’t hold it much longer!” Penny scrunched up her little face, clearly desperate. “If you won’t help me, then forget it.”
Amelia sighed in defeat. “Alright, Mommy will come with you.”
Penny’s face lit up with the sweetest smile.
She looked so much like Amelia had as a child—same features, same bright eyes. Holding Penny’s soft, tiny hand, Amelia felt something warm spread through her chest. No matter what, this was her daughter. That bond was real, no matter how rocky things had been.
Maybe Penny didn’t really hate her. She was just a little girl who’d been under Kristen’s thumb for too long. It made sense her feelings would be all over the place.
Penny led Amelia into Caroline’s room. It was Amelia’s first time inside her sister-in-law’s sanctuary, and she was a little surprised by what she saw: the walls were covered in video game posters. Amelia knew Caroline worked at a game company, but she hadn’t realized she was such a hardcore gamer.
A huge poster hung right above the bed—a team photo from the X squad, winners of the T-box Pro League championship seven years ago.
For a moment, Amelia stared at the poster, lost in her own thoughts, before pulling herself back to reality.
She guided Penny into the bathroom and helped her onto the toilet.
Amelia was waiting, just like she’d promised.
“Ready to go, Penny?” Amelia said gently, reaching out her hand.
Penny looked up at her, eyes shining. “There’s something in your hair, Mommy. Come down here—I’ll get it for you.”
Amelia’s heart skipped. Her daughter was being so sweet, so she immediately knelt down. But in the next moment, Amelia’s smile froze on her face.
She caught Penny, quick as a flash, slipping the diamond bracelet into her handbag.
A cold shiver ran down Amelia’s spine. She couldn’t stop shaking.
Her five-year-old daughter was trying to frame her.
